We took the Camberley U7s down to Weybridge Vandals RFC on Sunday morning for another festival in the calendar. With three Camberley teams entered, the players had a busy morning, each team playing three games and getting plenty of time with the ball in hand.
The squad also proudly unveiled their brand-new squad gazebo, which quickly became the team’s hub for the day. It provided a great focal point for players, coaches and families between matches. However, the strong Weybridge winds were clearly determined to give it an early “flight test.” At various moments during the morning, coaches, parents and a few brave siblings were called into action to keep it grounded, ensuring it stayed firmly rooted in Surrey rather than drifting somewhere in the direction of Heathrow. It may have wobbled from time to time, but it certainly made its mark as a brilliant gathering point for the squad.
On the pitch, the Camberley players brought plenty of energy and enthusiasm to their games. Across the nine matches there were strong runs, determined tagging and some great passing, with players supporting each other well and clearly enjoying their rugby. At U7 level the focus remains firmly on fun, teamwork and learning the game, and the Camberley teams embraced the spirit of the festival throughout the morning.
A huge part of the day’s success also belonged to the mums on the touchline. With the festival taking place on Mother's Day, many mothers sacrificed their morning lie-ins, breakfast in bed or relaxed brunches so their young rugby stars could take part. The sidelines were packed with proud, supportive mums wrapped up against the wind, cheering on every run, tag and try. Their enthusiasm added an extra lift for the players, who were clearly determined to put on a show.
A big thank you also goes to Weybridge Vandals RFC for hosting a welcoming and well-organised festival.
There is no rest for the Camberley U7s, as the squad will be back on the road next week when they travel to Esher Rugby Club for the Surrey festival — gazebo hopefully secured a little more tightly next time.
