The Senior Academy Blacks welcomed Old Reigatians U17s to Watchetts Park on what initially looked like a perfect afternoon for rugby. Bathed in brilliant sunshine at kick-off, conditions were ideal, although the weather had other ideas as the heavens opened around 20 minutes into the contest, turning the encounter into a much sterner test for both sides.
The Blacks started brightly and with real intent. For the opening 15 minutes they dominated territory and possession, pinning Old Reigatians deep inside their own half and asking plenty of questions of the visitors' defense. Despite the pressure, the breakthrough wouldn't come for the home side.
Instead, against the run of play, Old Reigatians struck first with a runaway try from deep. The successful conversion gave them a 0-7 lead and shifted the momentum of the game. Two further tries before the break allowed the visitors to build a commanding advantage, taking a 0-17 lead into half-time despite the Blacks having enjoyed long spells of positive rugby.
Old Reigatians extended their lead shortly after the restart with another well-worked try, but the Blacks refused to let their heads drop. Showing great character and determination, they rallied and were rewarded when Tim crossed the line for a deserved score, much to the delight of the home support.
The Blacks continued to battle hard throughout the second half, producing some spirited passages of play and demonstrating the growing understanding within the squad. While Old Reigatians added a further converted try to bring the final score to 5-33, the scoreboard did not tell the full story of the match.

There were moments of real quality from the Blacks, with players working tirelessly for one another and showing the benefits of a squad beginning to gel. Their determination, resilience, and flashes of attacking flair provided plenty of encouragement, and while the result wasn't the one they wanted, there were clear signs that this group is developing into a strong and cohesive unit.
As the season progresses, performances like this suggest there is much more to come from the Senior Academy Blacks.
