And a day that showed perfectly what age-grade rugby is all about: Ashton playing his first ever competitive game of rugby, while at the other end of the scale Tom celebrated his 50th cap for Camberley.
Our Greens started the game against Cobham and the first two thirds were incredibly tight, with the teams level going into the final 25 minutes.
There was some really good rugby along the way. My personal highlight had to be Bertie bullying his way to the try line from deep, showing exactly the determination and leadership you want from your captain. His hand-off caused Cobham problems all afternoon and he arguably produced his best performance yet in a Camberley shirt.
Going into the final third level, the Blues took to the field against Cobham Blues and produced an outstanding final 25 minutes. Our strength in depth really showed as the boys pulled away to secure a 55–35 win.
Elliott grabbed two tries, cutting some brilliant lines and showing real confidence, strength and pace. Arran, Zeph and Caleb were a huge handful in the final period, while the service from 9 was strong throughout and Hywel had another very good game.
There were positives right across the squad. Toby’s throwing helped the lineout function well, the outside backs looked dangerous whenever we got them into space, and Ashton put in a proper shift on debut and showed loads of potential. Even our new prop Rob made it along!
From the coaches’ perspective, we were deserved winners and physically very strong, but probably left some points out there. We need to look after the ball better in contact and at the breakdown, use our physical advantage to create space rather than always searching for contact, and continue working hard on our exits and attacking structure.
But the biggest positive is just how much the squad is developing. Players are improving week by week and the strength in depth is building nicely.
28 players involved. First competitive game. 50th cap. Plenty of tries. Plenty to learn.
A really good day for Camberley U14s. Together Stronger
