Another Solid performance from the Black and Ambers

Fixtures against KCSOBs have, in the past produced, in the main, outstanding games with both sides attempting to play expansive rugby, however, with the hosts clearly struggling with player availability today's game turned into a rather disjointed and bad tempered affair with many breaks for injuries not helping either side. With the Cam pack absolutely dominant from the first scrum they can consider themselves unlucky not to have gained a much bigger advantage from the official but despite this, and also a period when, although being reduced to 13 men for 10 mins, they still managed to score 2 tries, the black and ambers largely kept their cool and continued their amazing run of 5 point victories stretching back to the start of 2022.

With Tom Chennell and Josh Wright benching for the Army at Kingsholm the backs took on a slightly different shape with Liam moving to 9 from his usual position of stand off, young H taking the 10 shirt and another youngster, Ben Stevens, coming in at 15 and the changes as well as showing the squad's SiD also unveiled another young player of the future, Ben who had an excellent game and showed he truly has wheels.

With a stiff breeze blowing pretty much across the pitch Cam started proceedings and as in a number of previous games they started by trying to implement their expansive game before they had 'earned' that right and this resulted in lots of good movement followed by 'the impossible' pass however after about 15 mins following a series of attacking lineouts and also some tremendous scrums the ball was eventually shipped out wide for our Fiery Fireman to do what he does so well and force his way over in the corner for the first score of the game.

The game still was being played mostly between the 22s and on 25 mins the home side claimed a penalty goal to bring themselves within 2 points. Then we saw something special from Ash who, receiving the ball from a scrum on 10m, went from zero to very fast as he scythed his way through the home defence to dot down under the posts for a converted try, moving the score to 3-12 on the half hour.
Cam then secured the restart and great rugby again saw Oyoni, who probably had his best game of the season to date, break and feed Ben whose pace saw him clear of the initial defensive line and then we saw a perfect draw and pass move to allow our Fireman to cross for his second of the afternoon and an excellent conversion by Liam from the touchline saw the score move to 3-19 with 35 mins played.
The restart saw H make another outstanding break but then we conceded a penalty at scrum time which was odd as KCS had spent the entire afternoon going backwards at an amazing pace at every put in. Despite this oddity Cam, desperate to claim the tbp before the break eventually broke from their own half with Speedy Ben again showing his pace and our super reliable Fireman was on his shoulder for another perfectly executed draw and pass manoeuvre taking the score to 3-24 at the break.

The restart saw H, using the conditions, find touch well inside the home 22 and eventually, from a lineout in the KCS red zone we saw the ball swung wide for Ash to claim his second of the game with just 5 mins gone and with Liam adding the extras the score moved to 3-31.
At this stage the ball was being thrown around much as during the warm up before training and this clearly can be risky and on 11 mins the home side took full advantage of this loose play to score a well worked converted try but this only served to fire up the black and ambers and with Dom reclaiming the restart, play soon moved to the red zone and a great catch and drive saw our Ozzie Mole claim the touch down.

Cam then lost 2 players to the naughty step and we saw what this squad is really made of as they firstly repelled a fierce attack by KCS and then moved play back into the KCS and from yet another lineout catch and drive we saw The Mole, this time breaking off from the maul and charging over in the corner.

Then from the restart young H put Cam on the front foot again with a tremendous kick from his own 22 to deep inside the KCS 22, claiming the lineout with the new 50/22 law.
From the lineout we saw the ball swung out wide and after a dart by the Flying Fijian Big Dom was on hand to take the pass and stroll over for a converted try.
So with the score moving top 10-48 Cam were back to full strength and on 35 mins we saw our Ozzie prop score his third of the game before Speedy Ben got his reward for being the provider on several occasions when the Fireman cut through to send the fullback in for a converted try and a final score of 10-60.

Not the most enthralling of games we have witnessed this season with lots of niggle which I guess is to be expected as it seems that most teams not in the hunt for the top spot are looking to take lumps out of the black and ambers.
Overall Risey will be reasonably happy with the result although will clearly have lots to say about discipline and processes I imagine but good to see Liam and H perform well at 9/10 and exciting to see Speedy Ben show us what a prospect he is.
Just a little aside to Bradders (one of our very loyal supporters who unfortunately was a hooker!!) – take a look at the players stats – our Ozzie Mole after a few games of not seeing the whitewash has now moved to 18 tries this season – not bad for a prop – even Jim didn't manage that !!

So for Risey and the squad it was job done and now they have a weeks rest before the trip to Medway who currently are unbeaten at home this season but they seem to have missed a tbp today. Simply if we keep wining then we will win the League.
And Finally – well the C&Ws were thwarted last night with The Warriors pulling out of what the Shedheads had expected/hoped to be 5 point win to help them consolidate their position in the top 4 – that Diamond Geezer is so smart!!
