Cam score 89 and Nil woeful Irish

So on this grey afternoon we made our way to the new London Irish ground which, without doubt, is the best facility we have played at this season with the 1s and 2s playing on fantastic pitches where the grass was even better than my lawn!!
The opposition are clearly having a difficult season and the black and ambers showed absolutely no mercy as their stellar performance saw them score 13 tries and almost as importantly they denied the Geese any entries in the home side scorecard – for the second time this season.

With both 1s and 2s playing at Hazlewood, the 2s picking up the Irish 2s fixture against Guernsey, much was expected of the black and ambers following their rather fitful performance at Cobham the previous week and they did not disappoint, producing probably as good a 15 man performance as I have seen for several seasons with forwards and backs showing some scintillating skills resulting in 13 tries as well as great D all afternoon to ensure that Geese did not even get a peck at the Cam whitewash.

With Cam starting proceedings they were soon in the Irish half and from a lineout on the 10 a great driving maul saw the Cam pack make 15m before our Ozzie Mole proved everyone wrong when he broke off and charged at least 20m for the touchdown with just 3 mins on the clock and with Smarty adding the extras the scoreboard was up and running (except it wasn't as it stayed blank for the entire 80 mins)

Cam, thru BLS handled the restart well and again took play into the Irish half and when they destroyed the first Irish scrum they didn't need the pen advantage they had been awarded as Smarty, Jos, Brizzle and Harry produced a wonderful handling movement before George crossed on 7 mins and with Smarty doing the honours again the score was 14-0.
The restart saw Irish with a few phases of possession but as we saw throughout the game they found the Cam D much to good and eventually were forced to kick the ball away and from a scrum in the Cam 22 we first saw th ball moved out to Oyoni who made good yards before it was switched back to the other wing where George took play deep into the Irish 22 and although Cam were penalised following a good lineout drive they quickly regained possession and we saw Big Dom canter over for a try on 20 mins with H, who had taken over kicking duties from Smarty, adding the extras.
Irish, to their credit did apply some pressure over the next 1 mins when several pens on the Cam 22 were kicked into the corner but great D by the black and ambers and some poor lineouts saw them eventually pushed back to halfway and we then saw a great break by prop Bazza feed Dom for the lock to make it his second of the afternoon and the tbp and a score of 28-0.
However the black and ambers were not finished for the half when Dom stole another Irish lineout and we saw The Flying Fijian and Oyoni make good yards into the Irish 22 and again from the eventual lineout drive we saw BLS emrge from the pile of bodies to claim the score and another great touchline kick by H made it 35-0 at the break.
The start to the second half was even more explosive than the first when H took the restart and Cam moved forward and great hands by Murph saw George on his way with just 1 min played and with H again adding the extras the score moved to 42-0.
The restart again saw Cam run the ball out of their 22 with Jos and Jaid taking the ball into the Irish 22 and although skipper Tom was brought down when a try seemed certain the ball was recycled and a couple of patient phases later a great cut out pass by Smarty to George saw the winger cross for his second of the match on 44 mins.
It was all getting pretty frustrating for the home side at this stage as from the restart Dom, jumping at 2, pinched another of their throw ins and charged 20m to halfway and another pen saw Cam back in the Irish 22 where we saw a good break by Brizzle before the centre popped the ball to H for the young 15 to claim the score which he then converted.

The next 15 mins or so saw the game become a tad messy although we had several rampaging runs by Hughsey but when Cam were awarded a penalty 5m from the Irish line it was somewhat of a surprise that the official decided that Cam had collapsed things when the black and ambers had been so dominant in that area.
However Cam got their act together in the final stages when we saw Bazza eventually claim his reward for his efforts in the front row when he was driven over from the lineout
We then had some champagne rugby as the opposition tired, firstly we saw great movement by George, Tom Shawa and Murph who seemed certain to score but he was held up short only for the ref to award a penalty try for some skulduggery in the build up.
Then again from the restart a great scrum saw The Flying Fijian again as the provider set George free and the winger, who once played at Irish, played H in for the fullback's second of the afternoon.

Again this attack from anywhere saw Cam win the Irish throw 10m from the Cam line and swinging the ball wide again the backs moved into the Irish half and again George fed Tom and when the skipper was tackled it was George who was first to the breakdown to recycle the ball and eventually Oyoni dabbed down on the far side.

The final action was also dazzling as the confident black and ambers again decided to run the restart and initially through a great break by Bazza the ball went throw countless hands before Brizzle, another player who had played provider all game, eventually got to score and again a magnificent touchline conversion by H saw the score move to 89-0 as the ref signalled no-side.

This was an outstanding performance by the squad with the front row outstanding all afternoon, Big Dom imperious in the lineout and around the park, Voighty a true rock both when carrying and also in defence.
Coming to the backrow the performances of Shawa and BLS were again amazing, for 2 ex Academy players who probably, at the start of the season, had little aspirations of being a 1stXV regular before Xmas, they have clearly exceeded their expectations and become fixtures in a side which has a number of outstanding backrowers available and every week they continue to produce standout performances while Hughsey today was something like his old self, quicker round the park, prepared to launch into his familiar charges and aggressive in defence.
Skipper Tom who, with Smarty, has managed the side so well again was into everything and Smarty, despite carrying an injury again showed his class and vision which is so important to the side.
It was the first game for a while for the Flying Fijian and he looked surprisingly sharp and although he didn't get on the score sheet he was responsible for countless flurries into the Irish half while Brizzle again had a big game and is beginning to show his class more consistently.
Wingers Oyoni and George also provided serious threat out wide and with them claiming 4 tries between them they also enjoyed plenty of action.
And at 15 we have H, who until the Guildford fixture in Sept had never played senior rugby, now an integral member of the squad and in another outstanding performance scored 2 tries and knocked over 9 conversions, many of which were from the sidelines.

Next weekend we have a break so a chance to rest bodies etc before the visits of KCS and Medway complete the first half of the season.

And Finally – well the C&Ws really took it out on that hapless lot from down the A46 in the Prem Cup, racking up 71 points so the combined total of my 2 sides this weekend was 160 – some record.
