Cam have only themselves to blame as they fall just short at Havant.

So the trip to league leaders Havant was always going to be a challenge for another much changed black and amber squad not the least as it is without doubt the most hostile of venues in this league with a large and very vociferous band of supporters determined to see their side who are currently on top of the table, avenge their defeat at Watchetts earlier in the season.
In the event we saw 2 sides, both very physical, slug it out for 80 mins with huge defensive efforts from both sides but with neither side able to dominate the other and at the end, in a difficult day for place kickers Cam's Tom Dunn, who had earlier struck a superb conversion from wide out into the wind being left with a similar kick to sneak the game by a single point. In the event it was not to be as the ball was pushed wide in the strong breeze leaving the hosts victors by a solitary point having scored 2 tries to the 3 recorded by Cam.

Despite the horrific weather of recent weeks there were no issues on Havant's superb 3G pitch except for the brisk breeze which was blowing down the pitch and was in Cam's favour for the first half.
With Cam kicking off we saw the home side put together a number of phases but when the ball went into touch on half way they overthrew the lineout and Dyl took full advantage and took play into their 22 and following a couple more phases the home side were pinged and Tom Dunn knocked over the kick for a 3 point lead on just 3 mins.
However, as has been the story many times this season, the restart was not managed well by Cam and a penalty on their 22 saw the home side level things up on 5 mins.
The Cam restart saw them exert some pressure and a great tackle by Josh Wright saw the ball turned over and when the home side were penalised on their 22 the decision to go for the 5m lineout saw a great catch and drive by the black and ambers with Ozzie Greg eventually driven over for a try and with Dunny adding the extras the score had moved to 3-10 after 10 mins.
Havant from the restart then applied some pressure in the Cam red zone and eventually they forced themselves over for a converted try after 15 mins to level the scores again.
We then saw a period of real attrition with both sides aggressive both in attack and defence which in itself generated mistakes and turnovers on both sides and it wasn't until 33 mins on the clock that the scoreboard moved when the home side converted a penalty.
However, as we have seen in countless matches this season this only had the effect of firing up the black and ambers and initially some great D saw them win a couple of pens, despite going down to 14 man and when they won a lineout in the Havant 22 another dart from Josh Wright saw the home side concede yet another pen which Dunny again slotted to even the scores up at the break.
The second half started with Cam returning the kick off to halfway but when the Cam player following up attempted to charge down the Havant speculative punt the ball fell just right for the kicker following through and he was able to collect the ball and cross under the posts for a converted try and a 7 point lead.
The next 20 mins saw both sides striving for dominance without success but when replacement prop Pickett charged through from the Havant 10m line only to be put into touch by the corner flag this signalled another period of real pressure by the black and ambers with countless pick and goes in the red zone and when Havant were reduced to 14 for 10 mins the decision to take the 5m scrum was justified when Tio at 8 picked up the ball at the base of the scrum to power over and with a superb kick from wide out by Dunny the scores were again level.
So with just 15 mins to go we again saw both sides slugging it out with powerful carries by Voighty, and The Warrior plus some good breaks by Ash, Oyoni and Jaide in the backs but silly mistakes saw Cam concede 2 pens the last in time added on giving Havant a 6 point cushion.
However the restart from the second of these saw Cam mount a final attack and despite great D by Havant the black and ambers kept attacking and following a number of pick and gos which were held up just short the ball was eventually swung out to Dimples who spotted a mismatch in defence and his delicate chip was read by Jaide who collected the ball to touch down and the rest is history.

So near and yet so far, this Camberley side has become an enigma this season, never lacking in fight and doing some things really well but letting themselves down with periods of sloppiness and still desperately short of the leaders who will ensure that they play the rugby in the right areas of the park.

This was always going to be one of the most difficult games of the season and despite some good performances where we saw Shawa and Adam Pickett step up and also with young Tio having a big impact when he came off the bench, the overall performance was just not good enough to claim the points and Risey and his team will need to up the intensity for the rest of the season if this side is going to stand any chance of reaching the playoffs.

And Finally – well it seems that the C&Ws are suffering in a similar way – this week with 13 players unavailable through 6 Nations or injury they started with their 4th choice 9, who apparently had a great game, and came up just short at the Mad Stad to an in form Irish side.

Next week the 1s entertain KCSOB's (2.30 ko) and the following week, March 7th, we will play our game against Horsham – Watchetts 3.00

Meanwhile the 2s came second in their league game against Farnham, by a lot.
