Cam Claim points in tight game against Cornish

So a very wet Saturday saw the arrival of 'The Pasty Eaters' at Watchetts where the pitches were so waterlogged after this horrendously wet autumn that the game was moved to 'the top pitch' with the result that the Old Codgers' were forced to vacate their usual positions on the balcony and make the trek to watch the game.
This change of pitch also meant that our new electronic scoreboard was rendered redundant and without Dood's manual scoreboard as well it was all down to pencil and paper.
With the visitors slowly building their squad and with late withdrawals on the Cam side of Ash (concussion) and Smarty, the black and ambers saw James Wellden make his first 1's start at 10 and Oyoni switch to centre with Taggs coming in at 14.

As to be expected in the wet conditions the game got off to a very scrappy start and in fact this remained the story pretty much for the full 80 mins with plenty of endeavour from both sides, some neat play but also a multitude of errors with both sides wanting to play at 100mph without the control necessary in the conditions.
The first few mins saw Cam kick off and when they ran back the Cornish exit kick into the Cornish half they were pinged for holding on.
Cam stole the resultant lineout and play swiftly moved into the opposition half and when the visitors kicked into touch having taken the ball back into their 22 Cam had an attacking lineout but the drive was stopped by the visitors and play moved back into the Cam half.
The black and ambers then stole another lineout on their 10 and again took play back to the Cornish 22 but a knock on saw the attacking chance lost.
We then saw TommyA and Taggs return a defensive Cornish kick with some interest but another pen saw Cornish relieve the pressure.
This pattern of play was then pretty much replicated for the entire half with both sides guilt of losing possession at key moments.
Cam were very unfortunate when TommyA, running back a Cornish kick on his 10m cleverly chipped his opponent, collected the ball and having drawn the last defender and with 2 teammates inside him the Cam supporters were almost celebrating a score but the pass went astray and a cast iron chance was butchered.

Scrums and lineouts throughout the day were pretty even and this was the situation in open play when neither side could establish any dominance and it with both sides unable to convert kickable penalties it took until time added on for the first score of the afternoon when Cornish converted penalty from the Cam 10m line to give a half time score of 0-3.

Whatever was said at half time to both sides it had little impact as far as the spectators were concerned but the visitors extended their lead within 2 mins when a move down the blind side, from a scrum, saw them score a converted try and move into a 10 point lead.

As in previous games this season this did seem to energise Cam and right from the restart the black and ambers upped the intensity and after a lots of possession in the red zone the ball was swung out wide and Hughsey, who seems to be developing a knack for scoring at key moments, taking a brilliant line and crossed for the black and ambers first score of the afternoon and with Oyoni adding the extras it was clearly Game On.
Cornish, at this time probably had different ideas and with 59 mins on the clock they converted another penalty with a fine kick from the 10m line.
We then saw some great work from TommyA and Big Jayde who fielded a Cornish penalty in the Cam 22 and charged back into the Cornish red zone with a great physical run and a number of aggressive pick and goes eventually saw Taggs pick up and dot down out wide. We then had Oyoni, who to his credit had not kicked at all this season, slot the conversion almost from the touchline to put the black and ambers ahead for the first time in the game with about 20mins to be played.
With Cornish looking for the win and Cam desperate to hold on to the lead we saw both sides with huge intent, great D and too many mistakes and as the clock ran down in the growing gloom neither side had that magic to alter the score and so as the rain began to fall again the game finished 14-13.

Again another character enhancing game for the young Cam side against a Cornish side who refused to lie down and fought, sometimes literally, for the entire 80 mins.

Solid performances for the black and ambers with, again, much of the workload falling on the forwards with all of them delivering and again from the bench we had some added energy from Musa and Josh.
James, a late call up at 10, was very steady although he did not have the armchair ride which we have begun to accept as the norm.

Skipper Tom again was at the centre of everything and is growing with the management of the side and the backs looked dangerous on the fleeting occasions in which the had decent ball but overall I suspect that the coaches will be back to basics over the next couple of weeks as they push to maintain their league position.

So with the other results only 4 points separates the top 4 sides going into Xmas.

Next weekend the boys have a weekend off before they resume their campaign with a visit to Chichester for what will undoubtedly be another severe test.
