Cam continue winning run with comfortable victory at Hove

This visit to bottom of the table Hove always threatened to be a banana skin for Cam but, despite a spirited display by the seasiders the black and pinks eventually cruised to a 63-10 victory on a bright but bitterly cold afternoon.
Hove kicked off with a strong and icy breeze at their backs and were soon in the lead when they converted a soft penalty.
At this early stage Cam did not have their 'game heads' on and when their restart went out on the full they again put unnecessary pressure on themselves but at last when they did manage to get hold of the ball they soon took play up to the Hove 22 following a couple of pens and with centres Josh Wright and Woody combining well we saw a couple of good phases before The Warrior crash over for the opening score, so with 11 mins on the clock the score moved to 3-7. The game then went through a scrappy period before Smarty extended the lead with a penalty after 19 mins.
We then saw Cam's awesome restart drills at their best when Josh Wright made good yards before releasing The Flying Fijian who brushed off a few defenders before TommyA took on the attack before feeding Young Tommy Young who dotted down for an excellent try moving the score to 17-3 with just 22 mins on the clock.
The restart was messed up this time by the hosts and when Cam turned over possession we saw Hughsey both boshing and gliding his way deep into the red zone and although the ball ended up in touch we saw a great catch and drive with prop Greg driven over for another try and with a great nudge from Smarty the score had almost effortlessly moved to 3-24 and the game was already receding from the hosts at a rate of knots.
Again the home side immediately attacked the Cam line but basically outside their competitive pack they lacked any real cutting edge and the poor wingers saw pretty much no action for the entire 80 mins and so eventually they were turned over and yet again great rugby by both forwards and backs with young prop Bazzer charging into their half and the Flying Fijian again taking play deep into the Hove red zone and soon, following a couple of phases the home side's defence was all over the place leaving Josh Lewanituva to cross for the bonus point try with 36 mins and a score of 3-29.
The home side pack who were certainly a match for the Camberley 8 both at scrum time and also lineouts were still pumped up and eventually their effort was rewarded with a converted try just on half time but this would be the last time they would bother the digital scoreboard the position of which may be great for supporters in the clubhouse but is worse than useless for those standing on the touchline furthest from the clubhouse.
So the second half saw Hughsey collect the Cam kick and surge forward again deep into the red zone and after a couple of phases we saw lock Voighty drive over with several defenders attached – a just reward for the lock who had seen lots of go forward ball as well as being a key player in defence.
Again the restart was well handled and good metres by Woody before feeding Tom Young who had worked hard to support and interplay between him and TommyA saw our Peter Pan about to cross for another excellent score but when all of the supporters thought there was a score and Dinger was on his twitter m/c the fullback decided to pop the ball inside – which was a tad difficult as the rest of the team had stopped running and from attack the ball was moved by Hove 100 yds up field and only excellent scramble defence stopped them adding to their score.
So the black and pinks were then under the cosh until a great defensive kick by Smarty took play from his 22 to deep inside the Hove 22 and winning the scrum following a poor lineout by the hosts we saw Henry ' Tractor Boy' Petch cross for a try and the score move to 10-43.
Cam by now were clearly on top and even driving the Hove pack backwards at scrum time and scores came regularly with a miss pass putting winger Kiwi over in the corner.
The scoreboard was soon ticking again (although we couldn't see it!1)when good breaks by Petch and Woody saw The Flying Fijian outpace a tiring defence and cross in the corner and from the restart we saw Woody take a brilliant line slicing through the opposition before popping the ball to Tom Young for another end to end score.
This was then followed by another great move with Greg Wilmington making 30 yards before releasing the Flying Fijian for his hattrick and the final action of the game.
So banana skin overcome without too many issues – overall scoring 10 tries away from home against a side who certainly have a workmanlike pack is no mean feat although I'm sure the coaching team will have words to the squad about the need to perform at the highest level in all games. However in fairness this squad seem so comfortable in each their individual, and the groups ability and commitment that they seem to be able to up the pace almost at will as they did today even with a number of senior players taking a rest although this attitude may be tested over the coming weeks.
The 2s, again travelling with the 1s had a comfortable victory 43-7 in what appears to have been a bad tempered game during which the home side rec'd 2 red cards.
Next week 1s and 2s are home to Cobham .
And Finally – so C&Ws Academy were in action today in this new Premier Cup comp and they recorded a comfortable win over The Pests and next Friday are off to Brizzle for the next game. On a personal note it does at last that there is some higher authority somewhere which has resulted in Cips being able to work out his suspension with games he would not have played in anyway – Hallelujah.
