Casual Cam Concede their home record to KCS

So on this glorious Spring day – about time many of you will feel, the clubhouse was full for the Golden Oldies lunch hosted by George and Ron and it was good to see so many club members from far and wide. Dave Ball from Perth(No not Scotland and yes Jakes Dad) looked very fit, Chris Gibson and his Dad, Rocksy, Hutch, Ian Heustice (hoping his hand will have healed so that he can get back to playing golf), Stewart Davies but no Moyley, to name but a few, all recalling past glories and making plans for the trip to Twickenham.

However to the game - Much is said about how the difference between winning and losing in sport is in the top 2 inches (5cm for the younger members of the 1s) and today supporters at Watchetts were able to confirm that theory.
On one side we had the all conquering black and ambers, unbeaten at home, already League Champions and with a place booked to contest the National Level 7 Cup and a lifetime experience of playing at Twickenham on May 6th. And then we had the visitors, a quality side, clearly desperate to improve their final league position and looking to avenge the defeat inflicted on them at the beginning of the season.
In the end we witnessed a very tight game with Cam just off their usual pace all around the park, a weakness seized upon by the visitors who, although coming second best at scrum time, worked extremely hard both in defence and attack and on the day deserved their 22-17 victory.
For the first quarter the game was extremely scrappy and error strewn with both sides seeking control and the first score came after 17 mins when a great lineout take by Ben saw the drive brought down illegally and TommyD converting the penalty.
However the black and ambers lead was to be short lived as a great breakout by Ash and Oyoni was called back for a forward pass and from the resultant scrum a training ground move saw KCS cross for a converted try.
The restart saw Cam regain possession and a good break saw Oyoni pushed into touch just 5m short.
Then, recovering from a series of penalties, we saw a great period of rugby when half of the team were involved in taking the ball deep into the red zone and when Hughsey charged through TK was on hand to dot down close to the posts and with TommyD again adding the extras Cam had moved back into the lead.
Despite the battle among the forwards it was interesting to see the official call both sides backs together and lecture them – so the pack could have a drink and a snigger!!!
At this stage inaccuracy and also the Cam penalty count was clearly not helping anything and in stoppage time in the first half the visitors added an unconverted try.
Despite some changes and also the half time briefing from Risey things really didn't improve in the second period and KCS extended their lead with an unconverted try but things were all square again when, following a dart by Rory, Oli Wright picked up the ball at the base of a ruck and skipped through to sprint 30 yards and score a try which was converted by TommyD to level the scores.
Unfortunately things still did not improve for the black and ambers and in the closing minutes KCS added a further try to make the score 22-17.
This was, overall a below par performance by Cam, much more reminiscent of games earlier in the season when concentration, physicality and pace were very patchy, something which changed following the defeat at Exiles and the lads all know that they will need to return to the levels of intensity they showed when beating CP, Eastleigh, ORs and Coney Hill in that amazing 4 week period if they are to lift the cup at Twickenham.
