69 just the job for Cam as they claim bragging rights against a disappointing Farnham

So on a glorious September afternoon Cam welcomed local rivals Farnham 1s and 2s to Watchetts in Camberley's 1st home League game of the season. With Farnham riding high following their outstanding run last season when they stormed the League and won the National Junior Vase at Twickenham, I guess they arrived quietly confident that this game would see their first win of the season having fallen just short against Andover last week.
However that was never on the black and ambers radar and despite an unusually high error count the home side destroyed the visitors winning 69-13 scoring 10 tries in a very one sided encounter and with the 2s winning their game 62-12 the home supporters were allowed a smile over their pint of Ascot - other brands were available!!
The game started with Farnham 'having a dart' but, as we saw for most of the afternoon they were quickly turned over and a penalty which took play to halfway and good hands from the lineout saw Mac make his first of many breaks and when he drew the last defender his pass saw Jamie T cross for the first try which TommyD converted with just 3 mins on the clock.
The next score was not long in coming when, from a scrum on the Cam 10m, the ball was moved to Oli who cut through the opposition like a hot knife through butter, drew the 15 and a simple pass to brother Ash saw the centre dot down under the posts for another score converted by TommyD - so with just 9 mins on the clock the lead was 14 points.
The visitors came back almost immediately when they scored a simple penalty but this was matched direct from the restart by TommyD and 5 mins later he edged the black and ambers further in front when, following good pressure from the home side, the visitors again infringed and so after 18 mins played we saw Cam leading 20-3.
Cam then had a period where they became a tad sloppy with several good breaks going awry but when Mac turned over Farnham ball in the black and ambers 22 he made 50m before offloading to Ash who then fed young Jamie and despite his pace he was held up 5m short of the line.
Despite winning their ball the visitors, not for the first or last time of the match, spilled their possession and on this occasion 'old legs' TommyA made a half break supported by young hooker Mua and when he drew the last defender, loosehead prop Steve 'I used to be a winger!' surged over in the corner.
The restart saw a bout of kick tennis but when Cam forced a penalty on the Farnham 22 TommyD was on hand to claim the 3 points and so, after 35 mins the lead was now 25 points.
Again from the restart the visitors porous defence had no answer to a series of attacks and Cam were soon camped on the Farnham line and good vision by TommyD saw him switch play to allow veteran prop Dan Harvey to cross wide out.
The final act of the first half saw Hoff gather in the ball from the restart and make valuable metres before the ball was spread out wide resulting in #8 Mac crossing for a try making the score 38-3 at the break with the bonus point already secured.
As many of the Watchetts regulars know, Cam do have a habit of switching off when they have a reasonable score and today was no exception and the opening 10 mins of the second period saw Farnham, to their credit, set up a series of attacks which resulted in a soft try after 50 mins but this success was short lived as almost from the restart another turnover saw replacement Joe Wood cross for a try.
With the visitors visibly running out of ideas and gas the game became quite scrappy but with 60 mins played a neat chip ahead by Ash saw him burn off the flagging defence to touch down and he was back on the scoreboard only 2 mins later when , following good work at the restart by TommyA and Oyoni, we saw Ash break through and he just had too much gas for a tiring defence and so he crossed for a converted try making the score 55-8 after 64 mins.
Farnham then moved into the Cam 22 with a good pick and drive and bravely went for the 5m lineout when Cam were penalised however their lineout ball was adjudged to have been not straight and from the resulting scrum 5m from their line Cam #8 Mac again picked up and made all of 50m before the ball was eventually recycled and scrumhalf TommyD crossed for another converted try.
Cam then added to their total when, direct from the restart Oyoni, who had created problems for the visitors all afternoon, made good ground before feeding Steve H and although his pass seemed to hit Old Legs's knee it then luckily bounced into the fullback's hands and he crossed for another converted try and although Farnham did manage to add an unconverted try with 5mins left this did nothing to reduce their obvious disappointment at the result.
In the end this was a very easy victory for the black and ambers helped by the opposition who seemed to have a very limited game plan, give it to the big guys who will make yards, but clearly they had not allowed for the aggressive defence of Josh, Mac, Hughsey, Hoff and TomK who repeatedly drove these rather ponderous efforts backwards often managing to turn over ball.
The visitors were also clearly lacking in pace and had no answer to Ash, Oli, Jamie and Oyoni for most of the game.
It was good that the visitors chose young Mac as their MoM as he had a superb game in both attack and defence but in truth there were very few weak links in the side and the supporters will now be looking for yet another step up in the side's performance next week.
And let us not forget that this was also a massive win for the coaching team - Risey, Alun, Ash and JJ who put so much into this squad and their efforts mid week when they are now regularly getting 50+ at training were repaid handsomely today by the 1s and 2s and with the Squirrels winning 62-12 and so amassing more than 130 points against our local rivals it must be worth a drink or several.
And Finally, for all of you C&W supporters it was not such a good weekend with a second away defeat to have to handle, this time away at Welford Road - but as has been the case on numerous occasions at Watchetts over the years we have to keep the faith and trust that our new 'Messiah', Johan will make it right in the end.
