Rampant Cambo Overwhelm Third Placed Twickenham

As we move towards the business end of the season this weekend at Watchetts saw Twickenham, lying threateningly in third place, arrive full of confidence that they could reverse the defeat they suffered to the black and ambers earlier in the season following their recent good form which included a win last week over Old Reigatians.
On a beautiful spring afternoon, with an excellent pitch, both sets of supporters watched a very tense opening 15 minutes with both sides testing each other. From the kick off, Cam played more than 10 phases without making too many yards. However on 6 mins we saw a taste of things to come when a great break by centre Ollie Wright saw a certain score for brother Ash thrown away with a poor final pass. With both sides probing each other's defences across the field it was reassuring for the Cam supporters to see their scrum was already gaining some ascendancy and with Dylan's accurate arrows the lineout also appeared secure.
However the first score was not far away as 'veteran' full back Tommy A's cheeky chip and chase saw play move to the Twickenham red zone and good discipline saw the home side go through a number of phases before letting the ball out wide and a great miss pass by HT, standing in at 10 for the unavailable TommyD and Smarty, found Hoff wide on the left and after drawing the last defender his pop pass allowed loose head prop Dan Neal to sprint the last 15m to dot down in the corner with just 15mins on the clock. A fantastic touchline conversion by HT got the scoreboard moving.
The efforts of the first 15 mins already seemed to be telling on the visitors and the next score was not too long in coming when a good scrum saw Oyoni join the line and his break saw Ash charge forward before feeding Laz and when the winger drew the last defender Ash was on hand to cross under the posts for another converted try with just 22 mins played.
Then Cam, from the restart, quickly took play back into the visitors 22 and were awarded a penalty which HT pushed just wide but a further penalty saw the black and ambers opt for the 5m lineout and a clean catch and drive saw Dan Neal again cross wide out for his second of the afternoon with 28 mins played making the score 19-0.
This score clearly impacted the visitors as, straight from the restart we saw Dan Harvey, Hoff and Oyoni take play to halfway and then another chip from Tommy A saw prop Dan Neal charge down the touchline for almost 50m to score his third and his sides bonus point try and a score of 27-0.
That remained the score at half time when, I am sure, DoR Risey reminded the squad how Twickenham had come back to within 6 points in the previous meeting from a similar deficit.
The second half again started brightly for the black and ambers when they won a penalty which HT converted after 46 mins but Cambo immediately applied more pain when, from the restart, we saw Ash breaking from inside his own 22, burning off the opposition to touch down his chip ahead for another unconverted try.
Again from the restart we saw debutant Josh, with his first touch, steaming down the left wing only to be held up just short of the line. However the floodgates had opened and on 55 mins HT collected a loose ball on the Cam 10m line and outpaced an already very tired looking defence for a try with Laz adding the extras.
Almost immediately we witnessed another great piece of rugby when Mac fed Ash, still deep within his 22, and again we saw Ash switch on the afterburners to scorch his way into the visitors 22 before slipping a pass to the ever present Oyoni to dot down and with Laz again adding the extras the score had now stretched to 46-0 with just 60 mins played.
At this stage the visitors were completely demoralised and clearly had no defensive answer to the direct, powerful running of the Camberley squad and also little or nothing to offer in attack and it was only a few minutes later that, following yet another great attack, we saw Ollie cross for a try, again converted by Laz.
The spectators were able to witness some more sublime rugby when, from within their own 22 the black and ambers launched yet another attack involving Voighty, Oyoni and Laz which set replacement prop Steve Hastings free to charge in from 30m for his first try for the club and with Laz adding the extras again the score had reached 60-0.
However, clearly heeding their half time instructions the home side continued to play their brand of fast, aggressive rugby and added two more tries before the final whistle with Mac reacting quickly to a penalty awarded just 5m from the opposition line and on the last play of the game we saw Oyoni, following a crunching tackle on one of the visitors backs, only too happy to collect the loose ball and burn off the opposition for the final score of the game – 11 tries and nothing conceded making the score 72-0.
With the other results this weekend this puts a little breathing space between Cam and the third placed side but with a number of tough games still on the list it is still a tad too early to be talking about playoffs.
This was a magnificent performance by this young side which was truly appreciated by a good crowd, 100 or so of whom had enjoyed another of Lydia's excellent pre match lunches.
With so many outstanding performances it would be crass of me to attempt to highlight individuals but special mention must go TK, our exuberant and extremely popular back row forward who put in a storming performance, as he always does, despite losing his father, who had been ill for some time, just a few hours before the game. When Risey gave him the choice to take the weekend off TK was adamant that playing was what his Dad would have wanted – and what a game he had and although not appearing amongst the scorers he was voted MoM by the squad – our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time TK.
Also it was good to see a former DoR Phil Moyle finding time to visit us from the depths of Cornwall – to the uninitiated he was the DoR who took Cam to the heady heights of Level 3, now called National 1, and he was clearly impressed by the efforts of our current coaching team, warmly congratulating Gareth on their efforts and promising to visit us more regularly.
So with the 2s winning away at KCS 26-0 it was a winning AND nil weekend for the black and ambers.
And Finally – following last week's capitulation at Welford Road, it was a great night at Castle Grim on Friday when the C&Ws beat the Sorries 31-23 with a performance full of physicality, pace and dawg and now the dream of all of us one eyed supporters is that they will be able to reproduce this level of performance when they meet the high flying Pests at the Ricoh next Sunday.

No games next weekend and the 1s visit bottom club Warlingham on March 4th which will probably be a 3.00 start.
