Fifteen Try Camberley Stay on Target

As last week the weather forecast was a little awry with this week a beautiful spring day to greet the 2 teams for this critical game as Cam looked to consolidate their playoff position.
Visitors KCS who, in November, had won 8-5 in definitely the black and ambers worst League performance of the season and so despite the visitors recent dip in form Risey's squad were under no illusions as to the seriousness of their task.
However with just 2 mins on the clock Cam had already provided work for scorer Neil Doody and his bunch of helpers from the U7s when a great tackle in the centre allowed the black and ambers to turn over possession and the ball was played quickly to Oyoni who made great yards before managing to get the ball to Hoff who dotted down wide out.
We then entered a pattern of play which continued for the remainder of the game with periods of casual play interspersed with some outstanding rugby, so having conceded a penalty at the restart the home side fiddled around in their own 22 slowly moving play up to half way before winning a scrum in mid field and a quick ball saw Ollie in the centre carve through the opposition defence and touch down under the posts giving HT and easy conversion and only 9 mins played.
The restart saw Hoff taken out before the ball had reached him but Cam were not able to capitalise and lost possession in the visitors 22 but when the KCS defensive kick was fielded by Oyoni around halfway we again saw the attacking speed and prowess of this young side as the winger again made good yardage before releasing HT who timed his pass to Ash to perfection leaving the winger to show us yet again how much gas he really does have as he touched down in the corner. So despite the conversion being short the scoreboard was still showing the score of 17-0 with barely 15 min played.
As we have seen many times, these early scores often have a negative effect on Camberley and so it proved again with structures being ignored and just too many simple mistakes being made and, to their credit the visitors capitalised on this slack play to score from a lineout drive from 5m, reducing the deficit to 12 points with almost a quarter of the game played.
Cam however were soon moving the scoreboard along again when, having taken play into the visitors 22, we saw great hands by Hoff collect a rubbish pass near his boots, before charging forward before drawing the last man and putting Hughsey through in the corner and the bonus point try.
Then a passage of pure magic as Hoff, as always, secured the restart kick and set up the ruck before the ball was released deep in the Camberley half where we saw Dylan, Josh and Ash with superb hands set HT off for the corner making the score 27-5 after just 25 mins.
The next 5 mins or so saw the home side manage to butcher several opportunities but with just 32 mins we again saw potency of the side's pace when quick ball was swiftly moved to Oyoni who bullied his way over for another unconverted try.
Again the restart was handled well and from a scrum on the Cam 10m line we saw Mac, who was outstanding at #8, make a telling dart and set the ball up for Smarty to cleverly kick into space in the centre of the field and with #7 Hughsey in hot pursuit there really was only ever going to be one outcome as he beat the opposition to collect and touch down close to the posts to give HT an easy conversion.
This was clearly a good period for the home side, perhaps they were mindful of half time approaching and reactions from Risey but almost directly from the restart we again saw brilliant skills with Smarty, and Laz making ground before releasing Ash to score wide out with HT adding the extras making the score 46-5 after just 37 mins.
Well clearly the half time message was absorbed as we saw Cam straight into the attack and this time showing great patience and control as they moved play backwards and forwards across the field with at least 10 phases before flanker Hughes saw a huge gap in the defence and strolled over under the posts with just 4 mins of the half played.
We then saw another piece of Smart rugby when, from a good scrum, the young fly half held the ball up beautifully for winger Ash to collect and make the break before feeding HT for another converted try.
It was almost 10mins before we saw the next score but again it was pure class starting with a good Voighty lineout take which set young Mac off up field into the red zone and when the ball was recycled quickly an outrageous miss pass found Hoff 'loitering' close to the touchline and he forced his way over for a second try.
Well Doods and his little helpers were being kept busy as within only three minutes we saw a good lineout drive go over with hooker Dylan claiming the score.
And no sooner had the U7s displayed the score as 72-5 they were back at work following another great move from the restart with Mac and Dylan taking play deep into the visitors half before feeding Josh who touched down for another converted try.
Josh then doubled his try tally when, from the restart, the ball was quickly moved to him and his pace saw him cut through the visitors tiring defence and his chip over the last man luckily came back to him and he ran in unopposed for Cam's final score.
With the century so close discipline became 'questionable' and to their credit the visitors, who never gave up, managed to cross for a converted try and, perhaps more importantly managed to stand firm and deny the home side their 'ton'.
So this was not quite the game that we had expected after our earlier meeting but again the youth, fitness and 'no fear' attitude of this young side was a joy to watch for all of those lucky enough to have been at Watchetts if not as clinical and disciplined as Risey would have wanted!!!
From 1-17 (it seemed that TK as #18 was only there to get strapped and look the part!!!) we saw some excellent performances.
The back 3 of HT, Ash and Oyoni were absolutely lethal whenever they had ball in hand as were brothers Ollie and Josh in the centre while the hinge of Jake and Smarty worked extremely well until the final quarter when a bit of tiredness became evident. The front row, although penalised on several occasions performed well and its good to see Steve improving every week in his new role as loosehead. Dylan, after a couple of games out returned to have a very combative game, enjoying getting the ball in hand and with a good lineout percentage.
Voighty and Hoff again provided much of the grunt for the 80 mins although with his 2 tries will Hoff be looking for a move into the backs – could he and Ash be swopping places next week?
And finally the back row who are so critical in providing the platform for the backs to shine – Mac at #8 had an outstanding game both in attack and defence and is at last understanding that keeping control of the ball is absolutely key in his role. Hughhsey again showed his footballing expertise with a lot of good work and Josh Watson had one of his best games since his return from injury with some huge hits, several of which created turnovers and also he enjoyed a number of bullocking runs straight through the centre of the field, I think this is the only way he knows as in all yhe years I have watched him I have never seen him run in any direction other than posts to post!
Finally we should thank the visitors for making a game of it as in their dire position in terms of the number of available players this weekend I know some clubs would have taken the easy way out so thanks to Paddy and his team for turning up.
Next week we have our 1s and 2s in Surrey Cup action with the 1s playing at Chobham – ko 12.30 while the 2s play Cranleigh 2s again ko 2.00.
And Finally with no premiership games this weekend there is little to report from The Holm except that they have released their coach after the dire performance against the Queens and it looks like this protracted takeover by M Altrad could be finalised within a couple of weeks and is only awaiting approval from the Premiership clubs.
