Scrappy win at Warlingham keeps Cambo on Target

Today's visit to struggling Warlingham always promised to be a potential banana skin for the aspiring black and ambers and on a bitterly cold afternoon the Camberley supporters witnessed a completely different performance to the one they had enjoyed so much a couple of weeks ago.
Despite the weather forecast showing sunshine and reasonable temperatures the reality was very different with a biting wind blowing diagonally across the pitch, in fact it was so cold that veteran TommyA, operating as the video man for the day due to injury, requested hot coffee at half time to return feeling to his fingers!!
It is always difficult for coaches to prepare teams when the opposition are bottom of the league and have shipped almost 1000 points but for the first 25 mins, playing with the elements, Gareth's side pretty much stuck to the script by which time they had acquired the try bonus point and were looking comfortable at 26-0 but as so often happens discipline and systems seem to be forgotten and despite scoring a further 4 tries they turned in a performance which most of them will prefer to forget.
The game got off to a bang when, following a couple of poor lineouts, Cam won a scrum on their 10m line and a great break by Ash saw Oyoni dot down with just 4 mins played.
The black and ambers then inflicted more pain on the hosts when, direct from the restart, the ball was shipped wide to Ash who cut through the home defence like a knife through butter and raced over to score a try converted by Oyoni with just 6 mins on the clock.
The restart saw Cam knock on but a great scrum saw possession turned over and following a powerful break by #8 Mac the ball was again recycled quickly and we saw Ollie charge down the blind side from inside his own half and when he was finally tackled managing to pop the ball to the supporting Oyoni who dotted down for his second try of the afternoon before adding the extras.
We then saw some possession for the home side and they even managed to warm their own supporters when it looked like they were going to score only to be called back because of a huge forward pass in the build up.
This was soon made to seem even worse when, following a few minutes of pressure from the home side, we saw Ollie break from well onside his own half and unselfishly passing to his brother Ash for the bonus point try converted by Oyoni and still only 25 mins played.
Directly from the restart the home side were extremely fortunate to remain at full strength when a wild high tackle pole axed centre Ollie and earned nothing more than a penalty as the centre required several minutes before leaving the field.
By this time play had become very scrappy with Cam's discipline letting themselves down and with 30 mins played the home side scored a converted try which clearly gave them some heart but they were hit again straight from the restart when Cam attacked ferociously, deep in the home side's 22 with the ball going out wide on both sides before prop Stevie, who still believes he is a centre, burst through the stretched home defence to score under the posts although Oyoni was unable to add the extras!! and this remained the score at half time.
With the spectators now really feeling the effects of the chill breeze they were all waiting for the two sides to provide the spark to warm them and the half did get off to a fair start for Cam when with just 7 mins played we had the rather rare sight of scrum half Jake feeding prop Dan Harvey (no not the one who scored a hattrick last time out as we have 2 1stXV props called Dan) who 'sprinted' 20m down the blind side to score an unconverted try.
We then saw Cam switch off and with that the home side started to pressure the Cam line but the defence was, in the event, up to the task and the home side seemed a little bereft of ideas as to how to cross the line anyway.
In the final minutes of the game we had a few more glimpses of the real black and ambers when, firstly a great lineout take by Hoff saw Jake feed Oyoni who set Josh Wright up for a simple try which was converted and then from the restart a great scrum again turned over the ball and a physical touchline run by Josh, making his starting debut , supported by Mac saw them take the attack to the homeside's line before it was stopped but quick recycling saw Smarty perform his swallow dive (a la Ashton) for the sides 8th try and a final score of 50-7.
In simple terms this was job done again for Risey's squad although definitely not in the manner to which we have all become accustomed but when it was needed in most cases the squad were able to deliver against a side who tried very hard but basically lacked the all round skills required at this level.
It was good to see young hooker Mua in the starting XV and although, because of the difficult conditions, his lineout arrows did not fire quite as well as previously he is already demonstrating what a great prospect he is and with his cousin Josh also showing great potential on the wing in his first start there were plenty of positives for the coaching team to take from this game.

With the 2s winning 19-5 against London Exiles and the 3s beating Cranleigh 2s 22-15 overall it was a very successful Saturday for the Watchetts teams.
Next week the 1s entertain KCS and will be desperate to gain revenge for their loss earlier in the season in what was their poorest performance to date – kick off is 2.00 as it is again a 6Nations weekend.
And Finally yet another ' should have won' game at Castle Grim when the C&Ws pretty much played themselves out of a top 6 position by conceding 15 points to the Hairy Queens in last few minutes of the game to go down 27-30. So the question is now 'is this the end of LF and his coaching team?' whose achievements, frankly, in 3 years have not reached anything like the levels demanded by the Shed.
