After a long Christmas break Cam blow hot and cold but still manage to score 6 tries in beating a hardworking Effingham side

Despite the grey overcast conditions Watchetts was the place to be on Saturday with Ron and George's Annual Golden Oldies lunch attracting more than 100 for the pre match festivities. With the clubhouse buzzing, full of ex players and old friends who had travelled from far and wide for this annual get together and with three sides at home the day was set up despite the damp overcast conditions and the young Camberley side did not disappoint particularly in the first quarter when they stuck to the game plan and romped into a 17 point lead.
Right from the kick off Cam attacked the Effingham line spreading the ball out wide on several occasions and with only 6 mins played their efforts were rewarded with a penalty on the visitors 10m which Smarty converted. Cam then increased the pressure when, straight from the restart they executed their exit plan to perfection and quickly moved the ball out wide to winger HT who chipped the final defender and won the race to touch down with just 8 mins on the clock. Again Smarty made the difficult kick look easy as he stroked the ball between the posts from wide out.
The pain did not ease for the visitors as a great rip and turnover by Ollie Wright saw TommyA make a telling break before feeding stand in lock Hughsey who touched down on the right hand side of the posts for the second try which again was converted by the young 10.
So with 15 mins on the clock the black and ambers were in total control and as far as most of the supporters were concerned, particularly those who were enjoying the Whitstable Bay and Tom Taylors ales, the game was pretty much over.
Unfortunately it appeared that most of their team also thought this and so we then witnessed a very poor 60 mins from Camberley with moments of sheer brilliance mixed with periods of play more suited to U15s seemingly with everyone wanting to make breaks, score tries, execute the most outrageous passes rather than just continuing to execute the game plan which had already proved to be very successful.
Also, to their credit, the visitors, whose defence was excellent throughout, also refused to allow the black and ambers to treat the last 60 mins as a training game and they manfully fought their way back into the game and on 20 mins they scored an unconverted try.
At this stage the Cam scrum and lineout were completely dominant but sloppy play meant that they were unable to capitalise on the advantage and on the stroke of half time the visitors closed the gap with a converted try following a driving maul.
Following a roasting by DoR Risey at the break the black and ambers started the second half with a bit more focus and came close on several occasions and with 55 mins played they eventually got their reward when the ball was played wide to Hughsey who made a break before feeding TK who then fed young Mac who touched down wide out and with Smarty adding the extras the score was 24-12.
The restart was taken by prop Dan Harvey who made 25m to take play deep into the visitors half again but again Cam switched off and the persistent visitors reduced the margin again with a converted try after 65 mins.
The game was very scrappy at this stage and Cam soon had extended their lead when TK, following up a hack ahead tackled the visitors fullback just short of the line and when the ball shot out Ash was there to dot down for an unconverted try.
Right from the restart good hands by Cam saw Hughsey race down the touchline but the last Effingham defender managed to force him into touch on the 22 but from this attacking position Cam again forced the visiting pack backwards and TK, who already had claimed 2 assists, was quickly up to drive over from the 5m penalty and with the extras the score was 36-19 after 78 mins.
To their credit the visitors came straight back from the restart and again some very poor play by Cam allowed Effingham to score a soft try which was converted and earned them the try bonus.
Cam added another unconverted try by Oyoni in the dying stages before a bout of handbags brought the game to its end.
Clearly this was a very welcome win particularly following the long break but without a doubt the coaching team will again be trying to instil into this very young side the need to remain focussed for the full 80 mins regardless of the score as better teams in the promotion race will certainly capitalise on the side's lack of precision and discipline which they showed for great chunks of the game today.

In the other games at home the 2s convincingly beat Rosslyn Park 41 - 0 while the Vets lost a tight game with Esher 10-26.
Next week the 1s visit Old Tonbridgians - ko 2.00.

And Finally the C&Ws at last came good following their 2 rather unlucky defeats over the holiday period when they only managed to gain 2 LBPs - today they added 5 points to their total with a 55-19 thrashing of Worcester at Castle Grim and so are slowly moving towards their target of a playoff place (despite Paddy's gloomy predictions!!)
