Cam overcome stout Andover resistance for second Bonus point victory

So the first home League game of the season saw the clubhouse full to capacity enjoying an excellent Presidents Lunch
With 2 very smart Landrovers parked invitingly in front of the club and the 1s sporting their new kit, appropriately sponsored by Guy Salmon Landrover this was certainly a good way to start the new league season..
In addition to the regulars at these events we were also delighted to welcome 2 rather special guests - the first, former Camberley mini/junior and now Olympic silver medallist Phil Burgess and his Dad, and also Brian Divers who, in the 90s and early 2000's, was almost a fixture at Watchetts when he managed the 1s in their heyday in the National leagues. Brian now lives in Australia which is a bit closer to his son and ex Camberley player Warren, and their family.
As always it was great to see so many of the 'old' faces and I trust that they all had a brilliant day.
The game itself, although fiercely contested for the full 80 mins, unfortunately lacked some of the fluidity which we have become used to over the last couple of seasons which is, I guess, only to be expected as the team continues its move through the leagues and so meeting tougher opponents.
In Andover, as with Portsmouth last week the black and ambers were confronted by a much bigger pack which made scrum time a little one sided throughout the game with just a few exceptions, however with Mac again cleaning up most of the ball at the base of a retreating pack and great defence at ruck and maul time the visitors were unable to exploit their physical advantage consistently.
Cam also didn't help themselves as they were often guilty of trying to make the scoring pass far too early in proceedings which resulted in good positions being too easily conceded.
The first half started with Cam kicking away from the clubhouse and they were soon behind when a couple of simple mistakes eventually resulted in them conceding a pen smack infront of the posts with only 4 mins on the clock and the Andover started the scoreboard ticking over. This lead was soon negated however when, almost directly from the restart Andover were penalised on their 22 and Tommy D stroked his kick over to level the scores with only 6 mins gone.
The next 20 mins though certainly belonged to the visitors as they used their pack's power to gain territory and the black and ambers also were challenged by the ref's officiating at the breakdown and with 17 mins on the clock Andover had added a further penalty plus a penalty try to take a 3-13 lead.
However the black and ambers started to show the 'dawg' that they showed last week and when Tommy D's kick took play to within 10m of the opposition Line we saw Hoff cleverly disrupt Andover's throw in and the resultant drive saw Sam Voight bundled over for an unconverted try with just 25 mins played.
Scrum time was still a challenge for the black and ambers although lineouts were proving to be much more successful and when we again won clean ball from one on half way, blindside winger Ash ran a brilliant line to charge through the Andover defence before linking with Hoff who gave the scoring pass to Josh for another unconverted try with just 30 mins played.
The rest of the half saw Cam beginning to come into the game more but over ambitious moves often resulted in the passes go astray and half time saw the score 15-13.
The second half again started scrappily although we did seem to have resolved the issues which had conceded so many pens in the first half and with just 4 mins played a visiting player was pinged for holding on and Tommy D converted the straightforward kick which took the score to 18-13.
Although still unable to string a series of phases together Cam went further ahead when Oyoni collected an Andover kick deep in his 22 and ran the ball back, eventually feeding Ash on halfway and the winger simply burned off the Andover defence to touch down for yet another unconverted score with 55 mins gone.
Andover were not to be outdone and having taken play into the Cam 22 they exerted massive pressure on the black and ambers scrum and in the end they drove over for a try in the corner which was converted by the Andover 15.
This clearly gave the visitors a second wind and they were back on level terms when they added a penalty on 65 mins.
Cam, however were not to be denied and on 75 mins they were awarded a penalty 5m from the Andover line wide out on the right and with all of the black and ambers spread out to the left and just a couple of props on the right the visitors were completely fooled when the ball was switched to Dan Neal who, having already had some very effective charges down the middle of the park, found the 10m to the line no challenge and with Tommy D adding the extras with and excellent kick from the touchline the score became 30-23 and the bonus point secured.
By this time the opposition was beginning to tire as Cam began to move the pack around the park and great running rugby by the forwards particularly Hoff and Dan saw play reach the visitors line again with Josh only to pleased to dot down for the final score which was converted for 37-23.
Overall a very satisfactory result for Risey and his team - there will be plenty of things to work on in the week but again the forwards showed that even if things are really tough up front they just stick at it and with some outstanding defence and turnovers around the fringes they all put in a great shift and with ball in hand, Mac, Alex, Hoff and Dan in particular all threatened.
The backs always suffer when there is a lack of good quick ball but again showed how dangerous they are with ball in hand although when their forwards are struggling up front they, perhaps, should be a tad more careful and protect the ball a little better.
The 2s continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 47-0 win at Law Society
Next week the 1s are away at Effingham, the 2s are at away at Rosslyn Park and the newly re formed 3s have their first game of the season at Lightwater.
And finally, all Cherry and White supporters will be enjoying this weekend a lot more than the last couple of weeks following the outstanding performance at Sale - the mere fact that they appear to have learnt a bit more about playing in the right areas of the pitch and closing out games following their recent disasters bodes well for the future - Paddy?
