First Half Pens sink Cam

Second to last match as Camberley with the title and promotion assured visited third placed Teddington who were in third place but four points behind second needing a five point win to keep any promotion hopes alive.
Although not at full strength Camberley fielded a good looking side capable of seeking a rousing end to a fine season.
Little to chose between the sides in the opening minutes but after 10 minutes Teddington broke away out of deep defence and nearly opened the score but for a final forward pass. A minute later and a straightforward penalty saw the lead for Teddington. After 19 minutes the hosts were further ahead as a good forwards drive saw them over for a try but unconverted so 8 nil up.
Camberley soon fought back with territory and possession and saw the reward when number eight Mac Duabie picked up from the base of a 10m scrum and crossed for a try converted by Joe Wood. Soon after loose head Jack Robinson departed injured in a tackle with a Kyle Bowles replacing him.
Within ten minutes the slender one point deficit became seven points. Teddington had two successful penalties and six points in between an excellent series of moves by Camberley ending in a simple knock on. On the stroke of half time Teddington converted a fourth penalty to give them a 17 – 7 interval lead.
A few minutes of the second half and the hosts failed to convert yet another penalty but on 9 minutes they were 22 – 7 ahead. A good forward drive saw the try but unconverted. Facing the 15 point deficit Camberley exerted due pressure and although just failing in a chasse for the ball in the right corner did score after 22 minutes with prop Jeff Pritchard over but the conversion was just wide.
With even play from both sides the match them n looked solid for Teddington as they scored again their third try after 30 minutes and although unconverted it did give them a 27 – 12 lead. This was short lived as Cam immediately set up a fine move two minutes later to see centre Ash Wright over for the try converted by Joe Wood.
Eight points behind and Cam putting on a strong performance in the closing stages. Firstly a fine handling move with several players involved ended with a knock on with the posts looming within distance. In injury time a move out left and substitute scrum half Andy Wreakes over in the corner but a foot just in touch.
That ended proceedings with a 27 – 19 win and four points for Teddington. Each side scored three tries with the difference being the four first half penalties to Teddington ensuring the eight point success.
Next Saturday sees Camberley hosting Trojans to complete the excellent champion and promotion winning season.
Report thanks to Neil Doody
It was a great Friday night for the C&Ws - following such a disappointing season culminating in their very poor performance in last weeks Challenge Cup quarters, the boys, despite a huge injury list finally put together a committed, passionate performance in front of their long suffering fans at CG to beat high flying Chiefs and defer their playoff place for at least a week.
