Cam overturn a 21 point deficit to maintain their 100% home record and stay top of the League

Cam welcomed Old Tonbridgians to Watchetts for this league fixture with Storm Desmond, at least the wind, promising to play a significant role in the game.
With the strong wind blowing across the park towards the clubhouse the black and ambers played the first 40 into the elements and for most of the time they were unable to adapt to the conditions finding themselves 21-0 down after just 20 mins but they eventually got to grips with the conditions and the opposition and scored 23 unanswered points to claim the victory.
The visitors kick off was well fielded by Hoff and a couple of phases, followed by a penalty saw Cam move into the opposition 22 and when they turned over the first scrum the omens were pretty positive but a good lineout catch and drive by OTs followed by a quick break saw them touch down for a converted try with only 4 mins on the clock.
From the restart Cam applied some good pressure both at the scrum and also a good drive from a lineout won them a penalty but the wind was making things difficult for both sides.
On 14 mins the visitors extended their lead when a big defensive kick bounced fortuitously for their winger following up who gathered the ball and offloaded for a second converted try.
At this stage Cam seemingly had no answer to the physicality and pace of the visitors and the brisk wind and sloppy defence was just adding to their difficulties and on 21 mins OTs went further ahead when they won a turnover and broke through several weak tackles to score another converted try making the score 21-0 with only a quarter of the match gone.
To their credit Cam did not quit and from the restart Roger Wood won the ball from the vistors #8 and this was picked up by Mac who made good yards before letting flyer Phil Cresswell stretch his legs and he took play into the visitors 22 before being forced into touch.
Cam were not able to capitalise on this field position but in the last 10 mins of the half they mounted a series of concerted attacks and on the stroke of half time broke through the visitors tenacious defence when, from a scrum out wide on the right, the ball was played quickly through several phases before Phil Cresswell crossed wide out on the left.
However the second half started with most of the Cam supporters still doubting whether it was possible to overturn a 16 point deficit despite their team now having the benefit of the elements but they were immediately given hope when a poor defensive kick from the restart saw full back Laz run the ball back and when he linked with Phil the Flyer play moved deep into the red zone and following the resultant lineout openside Jono, returning after an injury layoff, forced his way over for a try just 2 mins into the second period.
Although Laz was not able to convert, this try certainly boosted the black and ambers and they were soon on the attack again and with the visitors now conceding penalties at an ever increasing rate Cam were soon again parked in the OTs 22 and with only 48 minutes on the clock they reduced the gap further with a converted try by centre Joe Wood whose powerful break saw him cross the line with several of the opposition still attached. So with Laz adding the extras the gap was now just 4 points and the Cam faithful became more confident.
With Cam now starting to use the wind to their advantage they again found themselves in the visitors 22 and yet another penalty saw Laz reduce the margin to just 1 point on 55 mins when he punished another of OTs misdemeanour's.
Probably due to the wind the game then went through another scrappy period but Cam remained focussed in a period when the visitors seemed to concentrate more on debating decisions with the official rather than getting on with the game and yet another of their ever increasing penalty count was converted by Laz on 65 mins to edge the black and ambers ahead for the first time in the match.
The final 15 mins became a tad scrappy with Cam missing a further penalty opportunity to extend their advantage and a tiring OTs attempting to run everything without too much success and so the final score remained 23-21 – quite a remarkable come back for this young team who really showed great character when facing a 21 point deficit.
When we arrived at Watchetts it was clear to everyone that Desmond would play a significant part in this game making handling, lineouts and kicking very challenging and so the resultant game between these 2 well matched sides did not prove to be the spectacle we had hoped for but for once Cam stayed focussed and allowed the opposition to lose their composure and discipline and ultimately the match.
The forwards had a tough afternoon but it was good to see Jack Robinson win his battle in the front row. Sam and Hoff, playing his first 1s game of the season having decided to 'relax' in the 2s, had a good afternoon while the backrow again starred with Mac developing his skills at the back of the scrum with every game.
It was always going to be a difficult afternoon for the backs but they stuck at it and despite the conditions they produced glimpses of true class.
Next week the 1s travel to bottom of the table Purley John Fisher before returning to Watchetts on the 19th for the table topping clash with Teddington.
And finally for those Cherry and White followers, the boys had a good win at home on Friday night and are now facing their European Challenge Cup (they are the current holders) back to back with Worcester over the next 2 weeks.
