Cam flatten Irons

To many of the Camberley faithful this game had already been earmarked as 'the one to win' following the 3 losses suffered at the hands of Rugby World's junior team of the year for 2014/15 last season.
In the event the game at Watchetts proved a tad disappointing with a rather wasteful Cam well worth their comfortable victory outscoring the Irons by 5 tries to 2 having left at least 3 more tries on the park.
The initial few minutes of the game saw play switch from one half to the other but the stalemate was broken on 7 mins when Cam charged down a Ironsides kick which was picked up well by Will O'Meara who fed Laz on the wing and no one from the visitors could lay a finger on the Welsh flyer as he touched down for an unconverted try.
Again the pace of the game was fast and furious with errors on both sides and a brilliant break from the restart by Alex Hughes saw his pop pass just elude Tommy A for what would have been a certain score.
But on 20 mins Cam doubled their lead when winger Laz collected a pass on his 22m line and his pace and stepping beat all the Ironside defence infront of him as he scorched over for his second try.
From the restart a great take again by Alex saw play again move into the Irons half and good support saw lock Greg W cross the line only to be held up.
Irons were not out of the game by any means and although the Cam scrum was going well the black and ambers were conceding far too many penalties putting themselves under unnecessary pressure which eventually told when they conceded a penalty which Irons converted to bring it back to 1 score on 30 mins.
The Cam restart was then caught by Alex Hughes and Cam moved to within 5m of the visitors line again and the half ended with Cam doing all of the attacking in the Ironsides red zone which finally won them a penalty on half time which Laz converted.
Following the half time chat from Risey about keeping it simple and sticking to the game plan it was clear that some of the squad had not understood as poor discipline from the kick off put pressure on the Cam line and Ironsides had all the skills and experience to capitalise on this and on 6 mins they crossed for a converted try bringing the score to 13-10 – game on.
Cam then upped their game and a great run by Laz, who could only be stopped illegally, set up the field position and with the visitors a man down a good lineout followed by a quickly taken penalty saw Jono cross for a try converted by Laz with 53 mins gone.
Cam however found themselves defending their line much more than they should have due to them regularly conceding soft penalties but at one defensive 5m scrum the young Cam 8 destroyed the Irons put in and won a great penalty for the front five.
Cam were playing some good rugby at this stage although they were still guilty of being a bit too loose but again a break by Laz saw play move into the Irons 22 and when the ball was recycled a great line by Joe Wood destroyed the Irons defence and quick hands saw Dan Bright go over for a try which he converted having taken over kicking duties for the injured Laz.
Although the restart saw Cam move into Irons 22 again poor discipline saw the visitors mount another series of attacks which saw a Camberley sin bin followed quickly by an Ironsides converted try after 77 mins.
Cam however were not to be out done and soon were back in the Irons 22 and despite several aborted efforts they eventually added another converted try at the final whistle courtesy of Greg Simmonds.
Another 5 pointer was just reward for the black and ambers in their first real test in the League this season.
It was great to see the scrum go so well this time round and the visitors were well beaten on pace all across the park but the young Cam side will also have learned that they must improve on their discipline and drills to cut out giving so many opportunities to the opposition.
Again the back 3 were outstanding combining pace and great footwork they were always causing havoc in the Ironsides defence, Will at flyhalf had another very good game and is growing in confidence in every game which is providing the perfect platform for our exciting backs.
Despite the Irons missing a few of their key players their pack was very experienced and it was great to see our young front five match them in the tight and outplay them in the loose.
The back row again were outstanding with #8 Alex leading from the front making numerous telling breaks from all parts of the field and flankers Jono and Josh required to work hard in defence probably for the first time this season. On one occasion in the first half the Irons had a maul on the Cam 22 and started to pick up and go and Jono dropped 4 successive attempts resulting in the Irons just to crabbing across the 22 – something which I am certain would have indeed pleased defence coach Oddjob.
So now the boys have a week off courtesy of the RFU and will regroup on the 24th when both 1s and 2s visit local rivals Farnham who have also made a good start to their League campaign.
