Cams explosive start to the season continues with an 11 try destruction of old rivals Midwives

On a beautiful autumnal afternoon in South Croydon the question for all of the visiting supporters was could the black and ambers continue their amazing start to their League campaign against old adversaries Old Mid Whitgiftians.
The answer from Risey's young warriors was an emphatic YES with a 11 try comprehensive demolition of their hosts as they proved themselves superior in all areas of the game.
Cam showed their attacking intent from the start with a good lineout steal and following a quick tap penalty Phil Cresswell was pushed into touch inside the hosts 22.
The resulting lineout was eventually won by Jono ripping the ball from the maul and after a half break by Alex Hughes #6 Josh Watson was on hand to cross the whitewash for a try for the backrow union. Laz, who decided to limit all his kicking practice to Thursdays added the extras so after just 8 mins Cam were on the board.
However they didn't manage the restart very effectively and were eventually penalised despite a great scrum and Midwives converted the penalty to make the score 3-7 after 12 mins.
Cam executed their own restart much better and Midwives were force to kick direct to full back Dan Bright who broke a number of tackles before feeding his winger. Phil did extremely well to stay in touch despite several attempted tackles before drawing the last defender and releasing Jono who touched down for the try which was converted by Laz.
Again Cam failed to get their restart drills working and almost immediately handed Midwives another soft penalty so with 20 mins gone the score was 6-14.
Cam again executed their own restart much better and a poor defensive kick by the hosts was again run back by the excellent back three and when Midwives were penalised on their 22 Will O'Meara opted for the kick to touch. With Cam winning their ball off the top Will O'Meara made a half break before popping the ball to Joe Wood who off loaded to Tommy A for him to dot down for another converted try on 25 mins.
Midwives then had a period of possession but were unable to make any real impression on the well drilled Cam defence and only a very questionable late shove on Jono stopped the flanker adding to the score.
However with skipper Roger W driving his team forward Cam stepped up the pace again and moved deep into the Midwives half but over eagerness caused several good chances to be butchered but when Cam stole another lineout Jono and Sam made good yards before releasing Alex Hughes to score a converted try making the score 6-28 and the bonus point already secured.
The second half got off to a tremendous start with Cam again following up their kick and managing to force a turnover and good quick hands saw Laz speeding towards the line only to be held up. The next 4-5 mins were probably the most crucial when through a series of scrums the young Cam front 5 completely destroyed their opposition and eventually claimed a penalty try which was converted.
From the restart the teams were brought back for a scrum on halfway and front foot ball saw the ball reach winger Laz who burned off the opposition to score and again he added the extras - so with 50 mins played the score had reached 6-42.
Midwives then for the first time in this half ventured into the Cam half and won good lineout ball on the 22 but poor hands in the threequarters saw them spill it and Cam again shifted the ball wide to Laz who raced in from his own 22m - no small wonder that he missed the conversion with all that running!!!!.
Cam attacked again straight from the restart and a great charge by prop Parnaby saw play again move into the opposition 22 but they managed to lose the ball. However they soon regained possession following a charged down kick and a couple of phases later saw James Armstrong cross for another converted try and Cam for the third week running had passed 50 points.
The restart saw the black and ambers switch off and the hosts managed to score a converted try after 60 mins but that merely restarted the Cam attacking machine and right from the restart intense pressure saw prop Parnaby score a well deserved try which was converted.
It really was all Cam as Midwives visibly tired and from the restart Josh charged deep into their half but Cam somehow lost control. At this stage everyone was running with the ball and we had the sight of winger Phil dribbling the ball for 20m (at least that's what he said he was doing)
However the next score was not long coming when from a scrum on their 10m Jono broke away to score.
From the restart on 75 mins it was Alex this time who tore the heart out of the opposition and Parnaby was on hand to score his second try - which turned out to be the final score.
This was a tremendous performance by all 18 - the back three of Phil, Laz and Dan were outstanding with their pace and running lines causing confusion in the opposition.
The Tommy A and Joe centre partnership is improving each week and looks very powerful - why Bomber and his aides ever considered England starting a key RWC game with 2 centres who have never played a match together is way beyond my understanding.
Half backs Will and Roger are also consolidating their partnership with Will having possibly his best game so far with his restart kicks always offering something to his side and his growing confidence in game management.
The backrow trio are all special with Alex oozing quality, Josh the warrior immense in attack and defence and Jono who, apart from his foraging duties, seems to have an uncanny knack of regularly being on hand to take the final scoring pass.
Locks Sam and Ben Harrison provided real 'grunt' today and with young Ben stealing numerous lineouts they were tremendous but the plaudits today must go to the young front row of Parnaby, Magoo and Fidds who played out of their skins not only destroying a much bigger and more experienced front row but also for their workrate around the park.
The replacements - James, Kyle and Jordan also contributed big time to what was a comprehensive victory which again so clearly bears the stamp of Risey and his team of Alun, JJ and Oddjob.
So next week we welcome Ironsides, lasts seasons nemesis, to Watchetts to hopefully provide a marker as to the progress this exciting bunch of players have made so far. Kick off is 14.00.
There are no C&W comments as yet but we hope that Rugby Chairman Paddy's trip to Penzance to watch #2 son play for the Pirates will be as fruitful as watching #1 son today.
