Tunbridge just too good for Cam on the day

So after the drama of last Saturday's frenetic draw at Havant the expectations of the Watchetts faithful were high for the visit of Tunbridge currently lying in 3rd place, however an excellent performance by the visitors coupled with a low energy first 40 by the home side saw them 17 points adrift at the break and
despite a much improved second 40, the Men of Kent hung on to deservedly claim the spoils.

With the visitors getting proceedings going kicking towards the clubhouse and with the aid of a stiffish breeze, Cam were soon under the cosh when Tunbridge converted a pen from almost halfway with some of those who had been enjoying lunch still on their way from the bar and TW soon found themselves in the Cam 22 again and good drills coupled with some soft defence from Cam saw the score move to 0-10 after just 10 mins.

During the next 20 mins we saw Cam unable to build any momentum and frankly poor defence and sloppy drills saw most of the action in the Cam half and with none of their moves working it was not really a surprise that the visitors went further ahead although some may feel that our Fiesty Fireman should not have been binned for what seemed like an excellent try saving tackle as George managed to wrap his arms around the ball, however a penalty try was awarded and so with 35 mins played the score had moved to 0-17.
Cam did then seem to generate some urgency in their play and in the dying mind of the half they were a tad unlucky to be held up over the line following a great lineout drive.

So after their cup of tea and lie down at halftime Cam were on the offensive from the restart and a great charge down by Dom followed by a great scrum saw Max, playing the advantage, crash over close to the posts and with Razor adding the extras the score moved to 7-17 with 38 mins left.
However the visitors were certainly not prepared to lie down and when they stole Cam's defensive lineout they dotted down in the corner on 49 mins to extend their lead to 7-22.
But still Cam could not put all of the pieces together and it took until 65 mins, following another great lineout drive adjudged to be held up, that, from the resultant goal line drop out the black and ambers at last burst into life and an excellent period of play eventually saw winger Bowers crash over in the corner making the score 12-22 with about a quarter to play.

It was to the credit of both sides that, despite the pace and physicality of the preceding 60 mins the attacking flair of both sides was still evident and we witnessed a fantastic example of commitment when the TW winger was flying into the corner, try guaranteed, until our young hooker, Spencer, who must be the find of the season, came charging over, the older readers will remember it as corner flagging, at some pace and his amazing tackle took the young winger into touch and almost onto the cricket square, a couple of meters short – absolutely amazing after all the effort the youngster had put in the loose and tight – and what pace to even get there.
With the clock ticking away Cam did finally up the tempo and after good darts by George, Brizzle and Bazza took play deep into the redzone Macca forced his way over to bring it to a 1 score game with just 5 mins to go.
However there was to be no magic get out of jail card this time as, despite Cam throwing absolutely everything at the visitors and setting up camp in clubhouse corner, there was no more action for the scoreboard and TW, without doubt the best squad to have played at Watchetts this season, deservedly came away with the spoils.

So overall a very sombre Cam who can only try to claim 5 points from the rest of the games but in reality look to be set for another season at Level 5 which, with a still quite inexperienced side, is probably not a bad result overall.

Next week we have another challenging fixture away at Brighton who, despite a bit of an up and down season to date, seem to be coming good following their away win at Bournemouth.

And Finally – so after remaining unbeaten in the Bic Biro trophy, the C&Ws, with good wins against Edinburgh and Castres, return to the Prem tomorrow when they host a powerful looking Sale side hoping to break their longest ever losing streak in the Prem.
