10 Try Cam Breeze past Old Tiffs

This Saturday Cam made the trip to Hampton Court, to play Old Tiffs in a rearranged fixture, where they were pleased to see an excellent pitch and slightly less impressed with the difficult, strong wind which was blowing diagonally across the pitch.
Cam kicked off with the wind in their favour and Wills kick was allowed to go into touch just 15m short of the OTs line.
From this position Cam almost immediately won a lineout on the home 22 on the opposite side of the pitch and a great take by Hoff was followed by an impressive drive which saw Jono credited with the touch down with just 3 mins on the clock and although our Welsh Wizard, Laz missed the conversion the black and ambers were up and running.
From the restart Benny's jinking run made 20m before releasing Phil the Flyer who took play again deep into the visitors 22 before being stopped.
Cam clearly had decided to play their own brand of high octane expansive rugby despite the weather and the second score cam following a great break by Mac – the ball was quickly recycled and abrasive hooker Dylan was unstoppable from 20m to dot down and with Laz adding the extras it was 12-0 after 10.
The restart was well handled again by Cam and we saw the ball go through many pairs of hands until play was back on the OTs 22.
With just 13 mins gone Cam won their lineout on the 22, and in a move straight off the training pitch, blindside winger Phil ran a great line and raced through the huge gap to touch down under the posts with Laz adding the extras.
Surprisingly the next restart saw the first scrum of the afternoon after almost 15 mins which Cam won against the head such was their dominance and this again put them on the attack and within a few mins they had extended their lead when Alex Hughes raced in from almost half way following some brilliant interplay by forwards and backs – so the bonus point was secured on 22mins.
At this point the Cam supporters were reminded that this was exactly the scenario last week against Farnham almost to the minute and the remainder of the half saw the black and ambers just not able to get the final pass to work and eventually we even saw a period of pressure from the hosts but they were unable to breach the black and amber wall and the siege was lifted when Jono stripped the ball and turned over possession on the stroke of half time.
The second half, much as the first, started with a score in the first couple of minutes while many of the supporters were still in the bar as Cam ran the restart back at OTs and a charge by Josh released Ash who destroyed the opposition before feeding Phil for his second try.
Again the restart was run back and Ash, who seemed to be enjoying the extra ball he was getting in the centre, again sliced through the OTs defence and put Jono through for a certain try only to be called back for an infringement.
After all of that excitement OTs finally moved into Cams half by using the wind and from a scrum an the 22 they scored a very soft try which the Cam backs will not want to view on the video – so 7-31 after 55mins.
The restart saw Cam benefit from a charged down kick and two interceptions, the final one being by Phil who raced over to score his second converted try of the afternoon.
At this stage OTs were struggling as a result of the massive tackle count they had racked up to date and so again from the restart we saw play swiftly move into their half and a good offload by Jono saw Hughsey cross in the corner for his second of the day.
So with the score at 7-43 the game opened up even more and a great jinking break by Benny saw him put Jono clear only to be pulled back for a forward pass.
At this stage Cams other winger Laz, was wondering just what he needed to do to get a pass and he became even more concerned when another fabulous move saw Phil again the receiver of the final pass as he crossed in the corner for his third try.
We then saw two moves towards his wing where on both occasions full back Brighty popped in and took the pass from Ash and proceeded to high hurdle and sidestep his way towards the opposition line, the second occasion resulting in his second try and a score of 7-55 with 10 mins to go.
And when OTs launched their final attack in the closing minutes of the game our confused Welsh Wizard visibly shrank believing that his last chance had disappeared BUT all his wishes were answered when Josh broke away from a 5m scrum and fed the ball quickly to Laz (almost certainly because Josh saw he still had 80m to go !!!) who stormed almost the length of the field to touch down and added the extras with the last kick of the game (7-62) – just reward for all the unpaid support he had given all afternoon!!.
So a potential banana skin had been handled well by Risey's developing squad in a display which at times included some outstanding rugby even though they perhaps didn't follow the game plan all of the time.
The front row, as has been the case for some time put in a great shift and with less pressure it was good to see Dylan and Dan's abrasive running with ball in hand.
The second row again provided the core strength of the team with Hoff, Sam and replacement Greg also showing how skill sets have improved so dramatically over the last 10 years.
The back row was perhaps the place to play in a game of this type which was much looser and open than some other games this season.
Mac at 8 made countless forays deep into opposition territory, Josh the Warrior was again simply magnificent in attack and defence and Jono, as well as winniung several turnovers he also turned provider on several occasions.
New pairing of Benny and Will ran the show at halfback – the supporters were treated to a number of Benny's jinking runs and Will had another impressive display and clearly becomes more comfortable and confident at 10 with every game.
Joe, Ash and Alex had a bit of a ball today and made the most of the freedom, showcasing their skills while the numbers for the back three speak for themselves- Phil with 3 tries, Dan with 2 and Laz with 1 (and 6 conversions).
So for Risey jnr and senior a very satisfactory result but with a tough away game against Eastleigh next week you can be sure that training will be very focussed as always.
And finally, for the benefit of our C&W readers particularly the ones who have not spoken with me today, just to report that they played at the Wreck on Friday night and came away with the spoils – in terrible conditions they did Ba**f 11-15 our first win down there for quite some time.
