The first Saturday in September saw a return to rugby at Watchetts as we celebrated the first game for our new President Derek Olsen who welcomed a goodly crowd to the pre-match luncheon, a crowd which included Immediate Past President Bill Murray.
It was also the day when the Blackpool Deckchair Appreciation Society under its Chairman Harry Fish launched their new very stripey and pink blazers which no doubt will visit all clubs in Surrey 1 hoping to dazzle the opposition. This group has also been known as SCRUFFS.
The 1s were pitched against a strong looking Old Reigatians XV but in the first half definitely had the best of the play, with good driving play, excellent set pieces and some scintillating running from all areas of the park and tries by skipper Phil Andrews and Frank Priest saw the black and ambers take a 13-3 lead into the break.
The second half saw the visitors up their game, and with Hoff cooling down for 10 following a tackle which did not impress the ref, and following some pressure the visitors eventually crossed for a converted try.
However the last quarter saw Cam return to 15 men and 2 converted tries restored the balance and a final score of 27-10 was just reward for a good afternoons work.
Coaches, Risey snr and JJ were well pleased with this performance from the young side and will be looking forward to next weeks friendly v Old Emmanuel, ko 3.00, before the season starts in earnest at the end of the month.
The 2s hosted a Horsham team and despite a valiant effort, particularly by a number of Vets who really shouldn't look at a rugby ball until October, can second.
