U8s Enjoy a Fantastic Home Festival

U8s Enjoy a Fantastic Home Festival

Matthew O'Reilly

New rules, new challenges, same TREDS spirit!

On Sunday 27 September, Camberley Minis hosted its annual Minis Festival, welcoming clubs and families from across the local rugby community to Watchetts Drive. With more than 1,000 people attending, it was a fantastic weekend of rugby and a great opportunity for our young players to experience the excitement of a home festival.

For the Camberley U8s, it was a particularly special occasion as we were able to put three teams out and welcome U8s players from Wimbledon RFC, Farnham RFC, Weybridge Vandals RFC, Dorking RFC, Guildford RFC and Haslemere RFC.

This season brings a big step forward for the players as they make the transition from U7 to U8 rugby. The rules start to change, with teams now playing seven tags before a turn over, a greater focus on knock-ons and the importance of staying onside. There is certainly plenty for the players to learn, and Sunday gave them their first real opportunity to put some of those changes into practice in a festival environment.

All three Camberley teams rose to the challenge brilliantly. We saw some excellent passing, running and support play, as well as some exciting rugby as the players began to adapt to the new rules. There were plenty of moments that made us smile from the sidelines, and it was great to see the players encouraging each other and enjoying their rugby.

Most importantly, the teams continued to demonstrate the Camberley TREDS values throughout the morning. They showed teamwork, respect and determination, while making sure they were having fun and supporting their teammates and opponents.

The players also had fantastic support from their parents and grandparents, who created a brilliant atmosphere around the pitches. The smiles on the faces of the players and the adults were a great reflection of what these festivals are all about.

Back at the Camberley base camp, there was plenty on offer to keep everyone going, with tea, coffee, water and biscuits for the adults, along with sweet cones for the players to enjoy alongside their well-earned medals.

Marcus Green, U8s Head Coach said “It was fantastic to see how much the players have already developed and to watch them take on the challenge of U8 rugby with such enthusiasm. There is clearly plenty more to come from this group as the season develops.”

A huge thank you to everyone who helped organise the Camberley Minis Festival and to all the visiting clubs for making it such an enjoyable morning.

We now look forward to the next festival at Wimbledon next weekend – and hopefully another morning of fun, teamwork and plenty of rugby from our U8s!
