Camberley Rugby Club is proud to mark a major milestone in 2025, 50 years since the very first Mini Rugby Festival was held at Watchetts. What began as a pioneering event in the mid-1970s has grown into a much-loved tradition, inspiring generations of young players and becoming one of the longest running festivals of its kind in the country.
The early festivals looked very different to today’s slick operations. Matches were played in all weathers, with results carried in by runners and teams changing in a huge Army tent pitched by volunteers next to the old oak tree. Catering was led by parents, and coaching was run by just one or two dedicated volunteers per age group. Despite the mud and the challenges, the spirit of rugby shone through and it quickly became a highlight of the club calendar.
Bob Hughes acted as Master of Ceremonies in those early days, while clubs such as Henley, Marlow, Esher, London Welsh, and Basingstoke were among the first to compete. What started with a handful of teams has grown into a festival attracting hundreds of young players from across Surrey each year.
Over the decades, Camberley Minis have been the starting point for players who went on to reach the highest level of the game. Alex and Fran Matthews, Ellie Boatman, Phil Burgess, and Jake Ball all began their rugby journeys at Watchetts before going on to international honours. The festival has also welcomed some of the biggest names in the sport, with former England Head Coach Eddie Jones presenting participation medals to delighted young players.
Speaking about the milestone, Mini Chair Steve Turner said:
"Our Mini Rugby Festival has always been about more than just rugby. It is about community, teamwork, and giving children the chance to fall in love with the game. To think that what started under an old Army tent has inspired thousands of young players over 50 years is something the whole club can be proud of."
Camberley Rugby Club will celebrate the 50th anniversary festival on Sunday 28 September, with a day of rugby, family activities, and the warm welcome for which the club is known.
