England and GB Sevens player Phil Burgess has announced his retirement from international rugby with immediate effect.
Phil, a Camberley original, started his rugby career at U7s here at Watchetts through to U16s graduating from our junior section into the Harlequins Academy. He then went on to study at Loughborough University and signed for the Cornish Pirates joining fellow Camberley Rugby academy graduate and world club sevens winner Rhodri Mcatee in Cornwall.
Phil was selected for the England Sevens Team in 2013-14 and went on to represent Team GB in the Rio Olympics in 2016, winning a silver medal. He was also awarded the Surrey Heath Personality of the year in 2016 and regularly visited the club sharing his journey with members and our next generation of players. An outstanding player, Phil also won silver at the Rugby Sevens World Cup in 2018 as well as bronze in the Commonwealth Games. He finished his career with 60 international caps.
Charlie Hayter, GB Sevens team leader said: "Phil has enjoyed a hugely successful career - both in XVs and Sevens. He has always been a major part of any team's success wherever he has played and has added value both on and off the pitch."
Phil still lives locally and is currently Head of Rugby at Cranleigh School.
Congratulations on a wonderful career Phil, we wish you every success for the future!
