Team on and off the pitch

Camberley Womens Rugby team played their last match before Christmas on Sunday and finished 2019 on a high. A trying day for all, the match commenced in winter sunshine and was dramatically paused at half time as the entire field, players and spectators alike sought shelter from horizontal hail stones reducing visibility to almost zero. A rugby first which the players all took in their stride as Didcot took the first points of the match scooting down the touchline just after kick off. Camberley replied with a try of their own as Lauren Blight found a gap in the line and scored. Monopolising on a weakly defended touchline Didcot scored another two break away try's before half time.

Camberlycocktails concentrated on their game and rose to the occasion doing what they do best, holding the advantage for the entire match keeping Didcot Valkyries camped in their half, as every member of the team played a part testing the Didcot’s defence to the limit. Rewards came as Captain Leanne Lewis powered over the line to score her first ever try in Womens rugby and Tara Barnett added to the Camberley tally board.

The finial whistle saw the away team take the win 27 -15 and a united Camberley celebrating how far the team has developed in this their first playing season. As a mix of experience and positions yet to be fully established, lead coach Johnson said ‘the whole club is really proud of how far the team has come. With new players consistently showing up we are building strong. This season is all about introducing the basics of the game as we develop individuals into a team to enter the league next season. There is place for anyone that wants to play here at Camberley”
