On Sunday 16th Camberley U15 (Blacks) faced off against Sutton & Epsom at Sutton & Epsom's home ground in the under 15s Ashton Cup.
Sutton & Epsom kicked off the game with a fiery start, creating a confident lead, scoring 5 tries and converting two in quick succession. However, the Camberley boys did well to keep their heads up, coming back to play harder and faster keeping the ball in their possession. After a knock-on from Sutton and Epsom, Camberley had a scrum on the 22’ where Matthew L carried hard offloading to Connor L who beat a few defenders to score Cambo’s first in the corner. Camberley 5, Sutton & Epsom 29.
Sutton and Epsom did manage to get another two tries (one converted) in the minutes following the team’s impressive effort. However, our boys got their heads down and put the opposition's momentum to a grinding halt. The rest of the first half was a great effort from our boys with a lot of great runs coming from Jonah and Matthew. The defence tightened with great tackles from Dylan, Vinay , Odhran and Max who were brilliant at stopping some of the more aggressive runs from the opposition.
At halftime, the score was 36-5 to Sutton and Epsom.
In the second half, Cambo had much more momentum, and realising the other team was getting tired, the boys only ran harder and harder with more breakthroughs. Alex took the ball from the halfway line, sidestepping his way through the defence and scoring a try right in between the posts (converted). After the kick-off, a good push from our team landed us closer and closer to the opposition try line, with a great effort from Alex but was ultimately held up. After the opposition pushed Camberley back to the halfway line, Cambo turned the ball over, landing it back in the visiting sides possession. A series of runs landed us back in the other half. Off from a lineout the Squirrels got the ball to the centre, with Alex making another great run and scoring another try (converted). Soon after the home team was able to sneak another 2 tries in (all converted).
Later another try was made by Sutton & Epsom, after a gap was found in Camberley defence. Around this time tensions were rising between both teams, despite this we managed to play a good game and Jake scoring the last try of the match (converted) with another great run and collective push from everybody.
The final score was 62-26
All the boys played very well and with a lot of passion and energy. Vinay playing 14, summed it up perfectly "we all got involved and fought”. Although tensions were high, the boys kept their heads up, with players proud of themselves and some of them saying that “it didn’t even feel like a loss”. The team wore their shirts with pride and worked to a high standard.
Well done, Camberley!
