For most of the rugby community the arrival of the summer months means loads of R&R, weeks lounging by the pool or even the occasional 7s tournament before rocking up to the dreaded pre season sometime early July.
However at Camberley we have a group of men and women players plus some of their friends and partners who regularly use these summer months to attempt the most crazy challenges for charity.
This year is no different except that this time all of the pain is just for fun.
So we have the main organisers of this pain fest, Tom and Laura Chennell – remembering that Tom broke his leg in the first game of last season against the Wombles this really is a test for the fiesty, Army scrum half who undoubtedly will be pushed all the way by Laura.
Along with Tom and Laura we have BLS (will he be a 6 or 2 next season?) and his friend Harry, Greg aka the Wombat or Our Ozzie Mole, Head Coach Voighty and his entire family!!
Also along for the turf games are Shawa our Nepalese Warrior, Pickle, Skipper Birdy, young Jack (the gremlin) and even a couple of former players in Harrison and Josh Thundercliffe aka Caleb, – who knows if they both plan to appear yet again in black and amber??? and not to forget Ian Vanders.
Apparently there are a number of challenges they have already committed to starting this weekend when a team made up of Tom, Laura and The Wombat, will be attempting to complete as many laps as they can in 24 hours (each lap being 5 miles and they are running ??) – this starts on the 10th June 10.00 at Wasing Park.
On 1st July we have the cycling part of the triathlon in Tenby with Voighty, Greg, BLS and Ian V taking on the 40 mile race while Tom will test himself on the 112 mile version.
Then on 8-9th July we have the turf games, a crossfit competition, at Ealing Trailfinders which now seems to have become a regular in our pre season calendar.
This year we have 3 teams entering, 2 male teams competing on the Saturday and a mixed team on Sunday – this will be the 3rd year we have competed.
Seriously though, despite it being tough I will guarantee that they will all have a brilliant time.
And Finally, as if this wasn't enough Tom and Laura are competing in the Welsh Ironman on 3rd Sept.
If you can manage to get to any of these events your support will be really appreciated.
