Camberley Rugby’s Jay Wilcox wins Volunteer of the Year!

Comms Rugby - Matt Searle19 Oct 2022 - 09:21

Congratulations Jay!

Jay was awarded Surrey Heath Sport’s Volunteer of the Year award on Monday evening.

Commenting on Jay’s club wide contribution, CEO Graeme Fleming said:

“Five years ago, Jay stepped up as a volunteer to coach our then Kinders (reception) age group, showing incredible enthusiasm and commitment in all weathers. Whether it's hot and sunny in early September or freezing in February, Jay is at the rugby club every Sunday morning, boots on, ready to support children from 4 to 15 have fun at rugby. He is now our mini and youth chair as well as head coach for our brand new girls U12 (Year 7) team.”

Club Secretary Nicki Bundock continued: “Jay has led our minis and youth section for four years. He ensures over 350 players, 50 coaches and 12 squad managers safely participate in rugby every week. Whether that's hosting opposition clubs for fixtures at Watchetts Park, ensuring first aid kits are replenished or directing traffic in the car park, Jay is running it like a well-oiled machine.”

“Jay has attended numerous training courses related to coaching and encourages fellow volunteers to do the same”, said Steve O’Meara, club chair. “He is an outstanding role model for his coaches, whether that's offering his advice on the structure of sessions or tips on how to engage parents when refereeing their children at tournaments and festivals. He also attends regular meetings of the club executive (also volunteers), inputting into operational, financial and strategic decisions to ensure our club thrives in the medium to long term.”

In typical Jay fashion, he dedicated his award to his fellow volunteers: “As humbling as it was to receive Volunteer of the Year, this one’s for the whole team. Thank you every coach, squad manager, first aider, coaching co-ordinator, safeguarding officer, fixture secretary, festival committee member, DBS officer, club officers, SCRUFFs (Supporters of Camberley Rugby Union Football Fun Society) and every other volunteer who invest countless hours to support the running of our mini and youth sections.”
