What’s your role at the rugby club?
Girls’ youth lead
And what does that mean?
I have been involved in girls’ rugby for 3 years now. Camberley previously had a strong girls’ section but unfortunately that stopped a number of years ago. I was approached by the rugby committee and asked if I wanted to be part of the team involved in bringing girls’ rugby back to Camberley. We have some every successful women England players who started their playing pathway at Camberley, Alex Matthews being one of them!
Girls can play mixed rugby until U11 and after that they move to the girls’ youth section and become part of the Girls U12 squad. I am responsible for the girls’ youth teams, so that would include U12, U14 and U16.
Why did you choose to get involved?
I was approached and asked if I would like to be involved. I play for our Camberley women’s team and I have a daughter in U8. I thought it was crazy we were able to provide mini and women's rugby, but our Girls’ youth players were having to go elsewhere! Camberley is a lovely family club and I felt it was important for girls to have a place at Camberley.
What were your first impressions of the club?
How welcoming and friendly everyone was. I remember the first time I came to the club, everyone was friendly and smiling, with good strong values. I had a strong feeling of being amongst a rugby family.
What’s the best aspect of the club?
How welcoming the club is. There is an opportunity for everyone to play rugby no matter your experience or ability there will always be a place for you to play rugby here.
If you could change one aspect of the club, what would it be, and why?
Like everywhere that relies on volunteers there is always a need for more. Before covid I think there was a lot more support for the club but with covid the number of volunteers dwindled, and it has meant that the club is relying on only a handful of people who already have busy lives, families and work. If I could change one thing it would be for more help, it could be with anything, coaching, club maintenance, sponsorship, kit shop, car park. Teamwork makes the dream work!
What’s your best memory at the rugby club?
Being here on a Sunday and my whole family enjoying themselves. My little girl is an Under 8 and then I have 3 boys in U11, U13 and U15 and then on a Sunday I play for the women. We really are here all day on a Sunday!! Everyone gets to play the sport they love together.
Last summer we had some great touch tournaments, the BBQ was on, music playing and we all played in different teams and all had a really fun day!
Describe the rugby club in three words
