Camberley Gin & Tonics 29 – Weybridge Vandals 19
Sat 12th Dec 2015
With Weybridge Vandals 2’s engaged with the Squirrels on Pitch 1, Camberley’s Vets side fought back to a fine victory on the adjacent top pitch.
The fixture having been brought forward from the scheduled game on the 2nd Jan was played in excellent spirit in a strong wind which had a strong bearing on the result with most of the games try’s at one end.
The G&T’s were determined to make the fixture happen with several of the previous games being cancelled for lack of players on either side. So the G&T’s started the game with 14 players until Richard Stock joined the game having turned up to watch. (A true rugby player always has his kit in the car)
Camberley started the game well with a number of good passages of play in which a scoring opportunity was missed. Vandals were ruthless in exploiting their opportunities and scored two good tries and converted both to be 0-14 up at half time.
When Camberley started to up the pace a little and with the half time addition of Andy Dowan and Andrew Jackson, there was greater purpose in the play. Dowan gave Camberley territory and after a storming run by “Maxi-Vet” Martin Hobley, Jacko forced himself over for a converted try. 7-14
Following a great run by Eddie “Meccano” who charged up the field like a loose horse at the Grand National, Stocky was able to profit with a good try on the right wing which was too wide out to convert. 12-14.
Caveman Jonesy, popped off to shave his beard with a Stanley knife, so Hobley stepped into the front row and Dave Nesling made a strong performance in the second row. And it was following a strong scrum that the ball came out to Stocky yet again, who stepped his man beautifully to take a good try which was then converted. 19-14
At this point Camberley were rampant and scored another converted try. At this point the author cannot remember exactly who scored the try but Kevin Pennell who played brilliantly in the back row really deserves a mention, so gets the score and conversion!! 26-14
Weybridge Vandals were by no means a push over side, they possessed some very large and strong players. They rallied well and scored an excellent try of their own in the corner. 26-19
Although the result was not really in doubt the G&Ts were spurred to attack strongly again and in the centre Ruan Beuke scored on his return to Camberley colours after a 3 year break for parenthood. 31-19
So a great win which was watched by some former stalwarts Gordon Shutt, Steve Turner, Andy Ford and Arwel Hughes. Great to see you down boys.
