Camberley Senior Womens aka CamberleyCocktails can officially call themselves a Team having played their first match.
Travelling to Newbury to play their development side, they experienced torrential rain, high wind and blazing sun before even stepping on to the pitch. Surviving the elements Camberley were ready to transfer their skills from the training pitch to the playing field. Newbury womens section boasts two teams and were able to loan a few players to the newly formed Camberley girls to play a full 15 a-side match.
The match was highly competitive with Camberley rising to the challenge, covering the field and going into contact with confidence led by captain Leanne Lewis. Leanne a former youth player (previous clubs Chobham rfc and Reading rfc) joined Camberley after a break in her playing career due to illness and has been a fundamental part of rebuilding Camberley Womens Team.
This day has been a long time coming and was enjoyed off the pitch by a small group of friends, family and resting players as much as on the pitch by the growing playing team.
Head coach Kim Johnson and coach Liz Frost said the most difficult part of the day was choosing player of the match as on this occasion each and every player deserved the title having shown true girt with two-thirds of the team playing their first ever match.
It was an excellent start to a new era of womens rugby at Cambeley RFC, and a proud moment for everyone that has been involved on and off the pitch over the past two years.
