On another gloriously benign autumnal day, Camberley hosted local rivals Chobham in a friendly fixture at Watchetts Park

Head coach Jackson rang the changes in team selection, offering those that didn’t get to play last week an opportunity to display their skills and abilities in front of an impressive crowd lining the first XV pitch. Amongst the 13 changes, several players were making their competitive Camberley debuts or being blooded in a brand new position. Whilst selecting from a smaller squad, Chobham wereable to field a strong team to face the new look Cambo.

Cambo kicked off and a ferocious and committed chase resulted in a Chobham knock-on and the first attacking scrum in a promising position. However, the strength of the Chobham pack was immediately obvious as they drove Cambo back and won the first of what was to be many scrums against the head.

With our scrum on the back foot and some ‘unconvincing’ tackles, the Chobham backs were able to find the space to run in 3 unanswered tries in quick succession. Our support play at the breakdown also meant that Cambo regularly lost turnover ball – definitely something for us to work on. Halftime score 17 – 0.

Head coach Jackson and minion coach Woody changed things around at halftime which immediately paid dividends. All of a sudden, our scrum was going forward and caused Chobham some serious head-scratching. Confidence was returning with some direct running from the snorting and snarling Harrison, the grunting and grimacing Dexter and the raging and rampaging Adam all making good yardage. Dan also made fantastic ground with a sensational charge up the middle reminiscent of an angry buffalo – he simply would not be stopped! Eventually the pressure paid off. Cambo won a scrum on the opponents five metre line which allowed number 8 Adam to pick up from the base and power over for a well deserved try.

Mentions should also go to the energy of Elliot at fullback, the commitment of James on the wing, the lineout work of Harry B and the power of Ben making his debut at second row.

Alas though, despite our efforts, the old Cambo frailties were to surface again. Failing to secure our own ball at the breakdown and further missed tackles allowed Chobham to run in further tries to put the game beyond Cambo. However, a consolation try at the death from man of the match Adam did restore some pride for the team.
Nevertheless, given the inexperience of the team, the players playing out of position and the unavailability of others, there were many positives to take from the game. As usual Cambo’s never- say-die attitude and grit and determination shone through – both excellent qualities. ‘Work-ons’ from the coaching staff include (unsurprisingly) securing our own ball at the breakdown and tackle technique.

Next week sees the return of the Waterfall Cup competition with a home match against Old Wimbledon Warriors who we beat in a close match last season. Very important therefore that everyone turns up for training on Wednesday evening. See you all then.
