We arrived at an overcast but warm morning, with two squads for the Surrey U7 end of season Festival. The coaches decided to use this opportunity to put the touring team together to allow the players to get used to each other. What we saw was a display of fantastic rugby from both teams, not only did both teams score lots of tries, but without any input from any coaches, both teams have started employing a drift defence, working across the pitch with communication between each other to plug the gaps. Furthermore after weeks and weeks of coaching the players to push forwards in defence to put pressure on attacking teams, we saw this pay off when one team put pressure on the attacking team in there own half, and ended up pushing them back to their own half.
It was a joy watch the players playing fluid rugby after hard training all year.
Part way through the morning a cry went up that a Harlequin and England player was doing the rounds. Some went off excitedly to try and find this person, others of differing nationalities (mentioning no names) were less fussed. Anyway Chris Robshaw and Stan South were found, and even found time to pose for a quick picture with both squads.
A huge thank you to all those that attended and the coaching staff present and absent, the players have come on a great deal since that first festival over 7 months ago.
