The G&T's march on!

#Fridaynightlights was at Watchetts once again and this time it was against long time rivals Weybridge Vandals Vets who made their way down to the G&T's home on a slightly damp and chilly night.
The G&T's were able to field what was possibly one of their strongest sides of the season so far and with a number of players unavailable in key position, was testament to the work both Tony 'Bones' Harbour & Toby 'I'm dangerous' Saunders have been doing in getting strength in depth sorted....with over 32 players putting their hands up for this match, picking a squad of 23 was extremely challenging and it was great to see the guys on the reserve list coming down to support the guys.

Old 1st XV & Army winger Bruno Green wanted to get in on the action and it was a pleasure to see him back in the black and amber for what was predicted to be a fairly routine win for the vets against a Vandals side that was yet to record a victory in League 2. Straight from kick off, it was apparent that the G&T's weren't going to get it all their own way and for the first 20 mins, were pinned down in their half with some tactical kicking made by Vandals, ex-Camberley player James Dunne was playing fly half for Vandals and of course he was subject to the usual Vets welcome on more than one occasion!

Some poor handling errors and the want to play expansive rugby meant Camberley giving away a number of silly penalties, but just after 20 minutes, some neat work from the pack enabled Bonesy to receive a short pop from Andy Dowan just inside the 22 and after quickly steamrollering over one player and performing what was described after the match as 'a hand off the WWE would of been proud of' on another, he went over to score the first of Camberley's tries. Vandals didn't really offer any threat other than their kicking game to the corners and a silly penalty infront of the posts enabled them to add 3 points to the scoreboard.

After a quick regroup, Camberley decided the simple game plan was going to be the best option and for the next 10 minutes increased their attack through the middle of the park with Dave Jollife, Ben Glossop and Ben Gotting all breaking through the vandals defence to set up great attacking options for the 3/4's....shortly before halftime, Arthur 'the Kenyan express' Osano had to go off with a hamstring injury and Rob Bamford stepped onto the wing, all we heard for his first 2 minutes on the pitch was 'I'm not sure what to do on the wing' but with Bonesy breaking through another set of tackles and a great offload...yes you heard that right...offload, enabled Bammers to score probably the easiest try in Vets history....obviously since that point he has now labelled himself as one of the best wingers in the club so congrats on alerting the WWF on your poachers status.

After the break, Camberley made a few tactical changes which saw Andy Dowan make way for Ali Gonse in his debut game for the Vets and he didn't disappoint, adding a try shortly after the break with a terrific solo effort down the right wing. You could tell that Vandals were running out of both gas and options and with Toby 'Dangerous' Saunders seemingly doing his own bleep test on the left wing, for the remainder of the half it was all Camberley. Some more neat work from Gonse saw Bonesy yet again employing the Undertaker hand off and showing his - thought it had gone a long time ago - pace to break through the defence and score under the posts....the crowd was just as surprised as him that he was still light on his feet, either that or everyone else around him was particularly slow....

Further tries from Andy Wreakes and Gonse saw the G&T's emerge 38-3 victors which saw them briefly top the Surrey Vets League 2 with a +90 points difference, local rivals Esher vets took the top spot on Saturday after victory against our next opponents. Weybridge were a well drilled side that were certainly much better than their previous results showed but it was very clear that they dropped off the pace as the game wore on...good luck to them for the remainder of the season and we look forward to the return fixture in the new year!

The vets' next game is against London Exiles on the 2nd December, victory will see us top the table and with the sort of squads being fielded on a regular basis, it's hard to see anything other than a Vets victory. Great to se so many people coming down and supporting the revived G&T's, the lads really appreciate the abuse being hurled to them on the side lines so feel free to come down and watch what we hope is enjoyable rugby!
