With half term week on us, the second league game of the season was always going to be a difficult fixture. Camberley players we pulling out of the game for the lamest reasons, Toby was getting married again, Turner was visiting care homes, Mark was sitting on the fence - literally, and one player even injured himself at a charity car wash the morning of the game !!
Anyway we had exactly fifteen men by the time we got to Old Paulines. It wasn’t a bad side. The hurricane was warming up but it was still dry.
We quickly opened the scoring with a quick try from Fothers, it seemed like this was going to go well, previous years had Old Paulines fielding quite a young side but this time we were more evenly matched.
Ten minutes in and Justin’s ominous warning about the ref became true. We were penalised for not releasing in the tackle and Old Paulines opened their score sheet.
Not releasing in the tackle was the ref's pet rule of the day, in fact it was used so much that a normally calm individual was so incensed he was heard to shout the immortal words 'WITH ALL DUE RESPECT SIR.......'
Several players didn’t want to play the second half, they were so fed up with being penalised off the park. However we did go on and finish the game despite this, the final score was 40 - 19 ( 18 of the O.P.s points were from the boot. )
Lets hope our next game we have less lame availability excuses and more luck with the Ref
