The 2s game against Dorking 2s was always going to be a test for them but in a thrilling game in which both sides scored, coach Tom Radcliffe will be overall very satisfied with the preparedness of his squad although, as with all coacheds he will have some work ons for Thursday before their first league fixture away at Brighton.
Playing with the breeze and down the not inconsiderable slope we saw the black and amber eight completely destroy the home side at scrum time and in fact they spent much of this first period in the home 22 but only managed a pushover try from a scrum and a touchdown from a lineout maul by Shawa to show for their supremacy while conceding a rather sloppy score during one of Dorking's rare periods of possession.
With the changes at half time the scrum supremacy was temporarily lost and Dorking scored 2 tries but to their credit Cam fought back with a try by Rob Leddy driving over from 2m followed by an impressive run in by Fijian John following a bout of 7s type play from both sides
As the game went into the last quarter the changes of personnel on both sides became more frequent and the play a tad less structured with both sides adding to their try count with the final score 35-33 Cam 'winning' by one conversion.
Overall surely a very satisfying session for Tom with the start pack absolutely destroying the opposition. Shawa as always was immense in the tackle, young Pickett is another whose size belies his power had very good game later even managing an appearance for the 1s, Ollie at 8 was also a powerhouse and with veteran Benny organising everything from 9 or 10 the side looks in a good place already.
So it looks like an exciting year for the 2s who, as members of the Zoo 3 league, will travel with the 1s on 7 occasions this season starting with Brighton next Saturday.
