Nightmare Journey no excuse for poor Camberley performance

I guess that this will go down as one of those Saturdays which are best forgotten. The initial part of the 'matchday experience' saw most players and supporters suffering an horrendous journey to KCS – with some of them taking almost 2 hours on a journey which should normally take about 45 mins with the result that the ko was delayed by 15 mins – we all hope that the soon to be 'Smart' M3 will be worth that pain!!.
In fact the afternoon even got a tad worse when firstly the floodlights, planned to be used for the second half, failed, the biting wind getting noticeably colder during the game and finally we all got to watch what was without doubt the worst game of the season made even more unbearable by the constant intervention of the official who definitely did not contribute to a flowing game and whose decisions often left both sets of supporters completely bewildered.
The game started quite brightly for the black and ambers and with winger Laz seeing the ball twice within the opening 5 minutes the supporters were quietly confident that they were in for another treat of fast, open rugby but within the first 15 minutes Cam had butchered 2 clear try scoring opportunities with poor passing and naive decision making.
Following this initial pressure Cam incurred the wrath of the official and three penalties later the home side were in a position to take the points.
The restart was good and almost immediately Cam were back on terms with a penalty from Matt Smart making the score 3-3 after 15 mins.
The game then slowly became a succession of often schoolboy type errors from both sides with the odd glimpse of skill thrown in just to keep the cold, and frustrated supporters vaguely interested.
For Cam their lineouts did not deliver the good quick ball they need for their game plan and for much of the game the scrum was in retreat which again put Mac under pressure to retain possession.
Despite this the black and ambers had several more opportunities to put the game to bed but the skills just were not there today to convert them.
In fact the longer the game went on the home side grew in confidence and 10 mins into the second half they took the lead following good pressure in Cam's 22.
This did liven up the black and ambers for a short period but excellent defence by the hosts ensured that there was no comeback and despite finishing the game camped in the hosts 22 Cam were not able to score.
Overall a dire performance with very few of the side actually playing anywhere near their potential – which of course is clearly not the way you win games and leagues!!!
Next weekend the 1s host Old Reigatians who currently sit second in the league – we must hope that with this poor display out of their systems the loyal Watchetts supporters will see a return to the fast open and skillful rugby to which they have become accustomed.
Meanwhile the 2s and 3s both entertained Farnham at Watchetts (no M3!!) - both sides won convincingly the 2s 64-24 and the 3s 38-15.
And Finally – despite the painful return journey to Camberley those C&W supporters had loads to be happy with when the news of a 34-18 thrashing of The Pests came through – 5 tries to 2 against the Premierships's form team and with 13 C&W players still unavailable some result!!
